The former professor died Jan. 8 of kidney failure at his home in Herndon, Virginia. He was 96.
After receiving tenure at Cornell, Usher combined his knowledge of chemistry, biology and astronomy to focus on the origin of life, a decision that did not sit well with his Cornell colleagues, he said in an interview.
“Cornell at that time was not in good shape,” he said in a 2015 oral history interview. “There were the big riots, there were guns on campus, black students had occupied Straight Hall. It was really in crisis.”
Dowd told students that a Cornell education was “boring and wasteful” in 1969, The Sun reported at the time, and said, “people are being crippled here.” The only thing that makes life interesting, he said, is the “ability to use your mind,” and he blamed the culture of Cornell largely on students and faculty.
“Greg was a cherished friend to all,” read an email to Dyson students. “He loved human interaction and had a gift for asking the often uncomfortable but always pertinent question.”
In addition to this groundbreaking discovery, Rubin was also a women’s rights advocate and a role model to many female astronomers working in a male-dominated field.
“Dad was firm in his convictions and passionate for his causes,” his family said. “He was single-minded in his quest to find better ways to save lives. Dad dreamed that anything was possible in the field of medicine, even when critics said otherwise.”
“She was a wonderful colleague — such a creative thinker and innovative researcher,” said Prof. Mildred Warner, city and regional planning. “It was an intellectual feast to be part of her classes or research team.”
“Ann was a superb historian of science and technology, a brilliant and dedicated teacher and a simply wonderful colleague,” Seth said.
“As attorney general for all eight years of my presidency, Janet worked tirelessly to make our communities safer, protect the vulnerable and to strike the right balance between seeking justice and avoiding abuse of power,” Clinton said.
