The men's hockey team got off to a hot start on Friday night with two goals in the first 8:00 of action at Dartmouth, only to see its lead eaten away by a series of bad bounces and mental errors. When the dust had settled, Dartmouth won the game in overtime, 5-4, on a controversial goal by Joe Gaudet.

M. Icers Head to New England

In its last four games, the No. 7 ranked men’s hockey team has gone just 1-2-1, scoring only four goals in that stretch. Head coach Mike Schafer ’86 and his players are looking to boost their offensive production this weekend, as the squad will travel to Dartmouth tonight and Harvard tomorrow for a pair of road games.

“We have to start getting some grimy goals,” Schafer said. “We have to start getting guys around the net. ... We need to get pucks up to our blue line, get it down on the net, get a lot of traffic and put a lot of pressure on the defending teams to pick up around the crease. We need to try to generate more offense that way.”

Barlow Keeps It Ice Cold

When Evan Barlow scored with 2:08 remaining in overtime Friday night to lead the men’s hockey team past Quinnipiac, 2-1, it was just the latest in a string of heroics from the senior forward — who leads the Cornell in game-winners this season and held the team assists title until recently.

In addition to cheers, however, the Strathmore, Alb., native has had cause for frustration over the course of his career — the talent has always been there, but not always the discipline. This paradox was evident from the very beginning.

In the Red’s first regular season game during the 2005-06 season, against Michigan State, the freshman Barlow got his first Cornell point from an assist on goal by line-mate Cam Abbot ‘06. The Red won, 4-2.

On Friday, senior forward Evan Barlow’s overtime goal earned a 2-1 victory for Cornell over Quinnipiac, putting the Red back in the win column after a two-game losing streak. Junior defenseman Brendon Nash assisted on Barlow’s goal and added a score of his own to help his team in the win.

Both of the Red’s goals on Friday came in penalty periods; the Red was 2-of-10 on power play opportunities. According to Barlow, the Red’s ability to take advantage of power plays is integral in winning games.

The Cornell men’s hockey team (15-4-4, 10-3-3 ECAC) was less than a minute away from a four-point weekend and a sweep of the season series with preseason ECAC Hockey favorite Princeton(17-6-0, 11-5-0 ECAC), when everything fell apart. After being stymied by the Red defense for most of the game, the Tigers scored two quick goals in the last minute of the third period to stun the crowd at Lynah Rink and topple the home team, 2-1.

Men's Hockey

On Friday night, the Red got back in the win column after last weekend's 0-1-1 showing. Evan Barlow scored 2:52 into the overtime period to earn a 2-1 Cornell victory over Quinnipiac at Lynah.

Quinnipiac struck early, as Bobcats defenseman Brett Dickinson tallied his first goal of the season to put his team up 1-0 just 1:30 into the game. However, Brendon Nash scored a power-play goal on a slap-shot from the point at 15:10 of the first frame to tie the game up.

The score stayed knotted at one until the end of regulation.

Barlow's overtime goal was also scored on the power-play, after he received a pass from Brendon Nash and wired a slap-shot on net that went through the legs of Quinnipiac goalie Dan Clarke. Ben Scrivens made 25 saves in the winning effort.

With a pair of top ECAC Hockey foes coming to Ithaca this weekend, Lynah Rink will host either a dramatic turnaround for the home team, or another troubling episode in a once-spotless season. The men’s hockey team has to overcome a string of bad fortune against Quinnipiac, which played Cornell to a tie back in November, when it takes the ice at Lynah tonight — with nationally-ranked defending ECAC champion Princeton coming tomorrow night.

Scrivens Considered For Hobey Baker Award

Shattering team records can present a daunting task, especially when your predecessors include the likes of hockey legend and six-time Stanley Cup champion Ken Dryden ’69 and a handful of past first-team all-American net minders, such as David LeNeveu ’05 and David McKee ’07.

However, junior goaltender Ben Scrivens has already established the all-time school record for tallying 206:44 consecutive minutes without permitting a goal and is on pace to shatter one, if not two, other individual records during the course of the 2008-09 campaign. While individual accomplishments are always nice, teammates of Scrivens also view them as an open invitation for some friendly ribbing.

M. Hockey Falls to St. Lawrence in Rout

At one point in the movie The Replacements, quarterback Shane Falco tries to explain why his team crumbled in a disastrous 1996 Sugar Bowl game, taking Falco’s fictional football career down with it: “You’re playing and you think everything is going fine, but then one thing goes wrong and another and another, and you try to fight back, but the harder you fight, the deeper you sink. ’Til you can’t move, can’t breathe, cause you’re in over your head. Like quicksand.”

Though a regular season matchup with North Country rival St. Lawrence isn’t quite up to the pressure level of the Sugar Bowl, the men’s hockey team found itself in a similar predicament Friday night in Canton, N.Y. — ultimately falling to the Saints, 8-1.
