Volleyball Falls to Hofstra in NCAA Tournament

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The volleyball team managed to make history Friday night, but came up four points shy of advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament when Hofstra pulled out a 15-11 win in the fifth game to seal a 3-2 match victory in first-round action in Penn State’s Rec Hall.

Only three weeks ago, the volleyball team lost a heart-breaking 3-2 match to Colgate — its third loss in five games — and appeared to be losing its grasp on what had seemed to be a promising season. Already with two losses in the Ivy League, it was clear that one more conference defeat could end the Red’s championship dreams.

Tomorrow night, amidst hundreds of Cornell fans inside Newman Arena, the volleyball team will play its most important game of the season. A win against rival Yale would earn the squad a share of first place atop the Ivy League standings, while a loss would force the Red to spend the rest of the short season praying that the Bulldogs lose two games in Ivy play in order to force a playoff at the end of the season for a trip to the NCAA tournament. The latter would be a very unlikely scenario.

Spikers Earn Split on Road

Completing a five-game Ivy League road swing, the volleyball team earned a split this weekend, falling to Princeton, 3-1, on Friday evening before sweeping Penn, 3-0, the next day.

“We played okay,” said head coach Deitre Collins-Parker. “The match we lost, we out-hit and out-blocked our opponents. We just had too many errors. On Saturday, the team really rallied together and played with a lot more unity.”
