Despite Stronger Second Half, W. Soccer Falls to Green

Unable to rally for a win after Dartmouth’s pair of early goals on Saturday, the women’s soccer team finished its season with a 2-0 loss.

Dartmouth improved its record to 11-7 overall, 5-2 Ivy with its win, while Cornell closed off its 2009 season 1-13-1, 0-7 Ivy.

“They were a good team, but I think we just came out a little bit too slow, so we just weren’t able to generate an efficient attack. It would have helped a lot if we had come out with more energy,” said sophomore defender Sidra Bonner.

Last-Minute Score Hands Red Fifth One-Goal Ivy League Loss

The women’s soccer team had only 24 seconds remaining in double overtime to hold off Princeton before ending in a draw. The Tigers used these final seconds to net the game-winning goal, giving the Red a 1-0 loss on Saturday afternoon in Princeton, N.J.

“Overall, it was a hard fought game and we played well and it was a heartbreaker to lose in double overtime,” said sophomore defender Sidra Bonner.

Despite being out-shot 20-4 for the majority of the game, the Red (1-12-1, 0-6 Ivy) maintained its defensive strategy as the underdog. Coming into this weekend’s matches, Princeton (7-6-3, 3-2-1 Ivy) was still in contention for the Ivy League’s NCAA bid, but Harvard’s victory over Dartmouth earned the bid for the Crimson and knocked Princeton out of the running.

W. Soccer Takes One More Shot Vs. Tigers

The women’s soccer team will spend its Halloween on the soccer field, appropriately battling against the orange and black of Princeton.

One of the team’s two remaining games of the season, this match will provide another chance for the Red (1-11-1, 0-5 Ivy) to improve its Ivy record.

After two close losses during the last two matches — the Red lost, 1-0, to Brown during the final five minutes, and fell, 2-1, to Yale in overtime in that matchup — Cornell is all the more anxious for a win.

“Since there are only two games left, I think we obviously want to end the season on a high note, especially for our seniors, because these are the last two games of soccer they will play here,” said sophomore goalkeeper Megan Bartlett.

Comeback Falls Short in W. Soccer’s Loss to Bulldogs

Jill Mendelsohn  —  Oct 19, 2009

The women’s soccer team has reached a turning point. While the Red hasn’t won in the past seven matches –– dropping its weekend matchup with Yale Saturday afternoon, 2-1, in overtime –– the struggling offense showed signs of life in its ability to come back from behind.

“It was a heartbreaker and a tough loss. We came back; we’ve been fighting to come back in the past couple of games, and yesterday we actually came back, so we became confident. … It was really nice, but then it was upsetting to lose in overtime. … It was a really good game for us,” said sophomore goalie Megan Bartlett.

Fordham 39, Football 27

Fordham quarterback John Skelton picked apart Cornell's defense on Saturday afternoon, throwing for 421 yards and five touchdowns on 21-of-27 attempts. Jason Caldwell caught four of the touchdown passes, a school record, but Asa Lucas had the play of the game. Facing a third-and-nine from his own two-yard line on the first snap of the second quarter, Skelton found Lucas about 40 yards downfield, and the wideout took it to the end zone to put the Rams up, 13-3.
