Women’s Soccer Fails to Derail Harvard Win Streak

The women’s soccer team had a frustrating matchup against Harvard, as it fell, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at home. This loss makes the Red 1-9-1 for the season and 0-3 in Ivy League play, while it advances Harvard’s record to 5-5-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League standings.

“It was a little disappointing, because we didn’t get the outcome we wanted,” said sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Murphy.

On a day when neither team could get much going through the air, Harvard's ground game picked up the slack, rushing for 251 yards and all four touchdowns and giving up only 62 to a struggling Cornell running attack that has averaged just 57 yards over its last three games. The win boosted Harvard (3-1, 2-0 Ivy), the preseason favorite to win the Ivy League, to the top of the conference standings, while dropping Cornell (2-2, 1-1) into a fourth-place tie with Yale.

Trying to recover and regain its momentum, the women’s soccer team (1-8-1, 0-2 Ivy) remains at home this weekend as it faces Ivy League foe, Harvard, tomorrow afternoon at Berman Field.

“The game this weekend will be our chance to showcase our talent and put goals in the back of the net,” said junior midfielder Katie Hayes.

W. Soccer Continues to Revamp Roster

After losing one senior last season, the Red added 11 freshmen to this year’s roster. After adding eight players last season, head coach LaRoche upped that total this season, giving the Red addition depth and coverage to all aspects of the field.

W. Soccer Travels to Philly In Search of First Ivy Win

The women’s soccer team will be in search of its first Ivy League win tonight when it faces off against Penn at Rhodes Field in Philadelphia at 7 p.m. The Red will try to snap a four-game losing streak against a Quakers team that is just one year removed from an Ivy League Championship in 2007.

The Red (1-7-1, 0-1) opened Ivy League play with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Columbia at Berman Field last Friday night. The shutout marked the third straight game in which the Red was held without a goal and was followed by a 4-2 defeat against non-conference foe Bucknell on Sunday.

“After last weekend, I know we’re all frustrated,” said captain Lena Russomagno.

Yet the junior claimed that the two defeats might have done more good than harm.

Women’s Soccer Extends Loss Streak to Four in Ivy Opener

The women’s soccer team dropped two more games over the weekend, extending its winless streak to four contests. On Friday evening, the team opened its Ivy League season with a 1-0 loss to Columbia. Yesterday, the team managed two goals but fell to Bucknell, 4-2, in the last non-conference tilt of the 2009 season.

W. Soccer Scoreless, Winless Over Weekend

The Red had a disappointing weekend on the road, losing in a close contest to William and Mary, 1-0, on Friday before falling to powerhouse George Mason, 2-0, yesterday afternoon. Traveling to Fairfax, Va., the Red played both teams as part of the George Mason Tournament.
