Following the wrestling team’s somewhat unsatisfactory 15-15 tie against Lehigh, the Red jumped head first into New York State’s annual Intercollegiate Championship, held Saturday and Sunday at Newman Arena. The Red finished the two-day tournament in first place, with five wrestlers winning individual titles. This is Cornell’s seventh team title in the event since the tournament was founded in 1970, and its first in eight years. Army’s squad finished a distant second, with 158 points to the home team’s 194.

The team’s recent success at the National Duals over Winter Break, however, gave the team the necessary confidence going into the first day of matches.

The wrestling team is used to winning. They are used to winning because, in all honesty, that’s what they do best. You can see it in the face of head coach Rob Koll when he talks about this team, his team. He has faith in these young men; this team, his team. They will win, he says. How does he know this? Troy Nickerson Claims National Championship

Zack Slabotsky  —  Mar 23, 2009

The wrestling team traveled to St. Louis hoping to return as national champions. However, only junior Troy Nickerson was successful in that quest. The Red, which entered the tournament ranked second, finished fifth. Nickerson, competing at 125 pounds, won all five of his matches en route to claiming an individual National Championship.

Nickerson was one of four Red wrestlers to earn All-American status. The others were seniors Steve Anceravage and Jordan Leen and freshman Cam Simaz. Cornell finished behind Iowa, Ohio State, Iowa State and Nebraska, in that order. Iowa also won the National Championship last season and has won 22 total in its history.
