The men's basketball team was given the 14th seed in the western bracket today. This is the Red's second consecutive berth into the NCAA tournament, and their seeding is identical to last year's campaign. The team entered the tournament a year ago at No. 14, facing No. 3 Stanford. The team lost in a rout, but is hoping to return to the big dance with experience on their side.

Although the Ivy title was wrapped up a night earlier, the men’s basketball team kept the intensity level up and avenged its 20-point loss to Princeton earlier this season with a 60-51 victory over the Tigers on Saturday night at Newman Arena.

“We definitely wanted revenge,” said junior guard Louis Dale, who had 11 points and four rebounds on the night.

Princeton snapped the Red’s (21-9, 11-3 Ivy) Ivy League win streak on Feb. 6 with a 61-41 upset of the defending Ivy League champions.

“Announce the Princeton score,” fans yelled excitedly.

“Donahue doesn’t want it announced,” came the reply from press row.

But with less than two minutes left, men’s basketball head coach Steve Donahue’s wife decided it was time for him and his team to know what everyone else already did — the Red was mere minutes away from its second straight Ivy title.Victory!: The men's basketball team celebrates its second-straight Ivy League Championship by cutting the net.Victory!: The men's basketball team celebrates its second-straight Ivy League Championship by cutting the net.

Men's basketball 83, Penn 59

Cornell clinched its second straight Ivy title and the accompanying berth to the NCAA tournament with a dominant 83-59 win over Penn on Friday night. The Red's win coupled with Princeton's 58-44 loss to Columbia handed Cornell the title.

Junior Ryan Wittman had a game-high 25 points, largely on his 6-of-10 performance from behind the arc. The game was back-and-forth in the first half but the Cornell defense played hard and the team pulled away for the win.

You can go big or go home. Seniors Aid M. Cagers’ Success

When they signed on with the men’s basketball team, the members of the Class of 2009 — Adam Gore, Khaliq Gant, Jason Battle, Conor Mullen and Brian Kreefer — must have been wondering what they were getting themselves into. In 2004-05, the year before their freshman season (except for Gant, who played that year), the Red went 13-14 overall with a respectable 8-6 record in the Ivy League. That team put up respectable, if not impressive, stats; it cruised to a second-place finish in the Ivy League, but did not pose a serious threat to Ancient Eight champion Penn’s 13-1 league record.

“Obviously we’re a lot better now,” said Gore, a team captain for the second year in a row.

In last year’s dramatic game, junior Alex Tyler scored a layup to give the team a comeback win after being down by 5 with 30 seconds on the clock. This year with the game on the line, junior Louis Dale penetrated to the lane but wasn’t able to connect.

“I came off a double screen,” Wittman said. “After that, Louis was the second option. He got the ball and made a play. And it didn’t go our way.”

Red Defense Contains Barnett in Win Over Dartmouth

When Cornell traveled to take on Dartmouth, a surprise contender for the Ivy title, on Friday night, some might have expected a repeat of the Red’s 79-76 double overtime thriller win on Feb. 14. But junior Ryan Wittman’s hot shooting night helped to douse the upstart Green’s title hopes and lift Cornell over Dartmouth, 75-57. The loss dropped Dartmouth into a fourth-place tie in the Ancient Eight, but the Green rebounded with a 67-53 win over Columbia on Saturday to pull into a three-way tie for third. Cornell is in first place and has a two-game lead with two left to play in the Ivy League schedule.
