Winter Classic is No Classic

On New Year’s Day, for the first time in a long time, everybody seemed to be talking about hockey. The college football bowl games have been incredibly boring, everyone is sick of Roger Clemens, and no can get excited about a Charlotte Bobcats-Atlanta Hawks NBA matchup. Therefore, on Jan. 1, the NHL presented the “Winter Classic,” an outdoor game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., (the normal home of the Buffalo Bills) between the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Financially, the game was a big coup for the NHL. The contest was the highest rated regular-season NHL game in over a decade, with a bigger audience than last year’s Stanley Cup Finals. The stadium was full with Sabres fans who drank so much Genny Light that they didn’t feel the cold. In addition, media outlets who normally only talk about hockey when the Islanders’ Chris Simon commits a crime on the ice talked about the game ad nauseam.

A Lose-Lose Situation

Wait, the Patriots are 15-0? I hadn’t noticed. I guess I missed the constant articles, coverage, prime time games and the “Patriots” section of ESPN’s “Bottom Line.” Believe it or not, New England will in fact be going for a perfect regular season this weekend. I have ardently rooted against New England for 15 games, all for naught. Normally, this week I would continue my hatred of the Pats, but Saturday night’s matchup presents a conundrum for any Jets fan like myself – the Patriots against the Giants.

Right now, there are no two teams in the NFL than I hate more than these two. Because a Patriots victory would mean the second undefeated regular season in NFL history, I obviously will be watching the game. But who should I root for?

ESPN Hits a New Low

Congratulations Tiger Woods! Yes, Woods has won 12 majors, is a new father and could probably run Nike. But that is nothing compared to his most recent win in ESPN’s Who’s Now competition! Yeah! Every day for the past several weeks, ESPN’s Sportscenter has been running this inane competition and now that it is over, I feel like ESPN owes me my life back. I have not met a single person who either liked Who’s Now or thought it was a good idea. Yet, for some reason, ESPN executives were probably all congratulating themselves and high-fiving each other after coming up with the idea.

Learning to Spell Teixeira

For baseball fans, the trading deadline, which is always held on July 31, is one of the best days of the year, along with the playoffs and opening day (with the worst day being the day where I inevitably find out that Tim McCarver still works for FOX). The deadline used to be at midnight, which I really liked when I was younger, as I imagined GMs working endlessly into the night, watching Nickelodeon, placing “Truth or Dare” and making trades. The new 4 p.m. deadline is relatively anti-climatic, but still fun to follow. Therefore, I thought I’d do a daily diary for the three days before 4 p.m. Tuesday, and chronicle all the moves.

It's Beckham's Galaxy, and We're Living in It

I was all set to blog about David Beckham’s debut match with the L.A. Galaxy. It was a great idea; I was going to give a non-soccer fan’s perspective on the event, because I admit that I am truly ignorant about soccer. I barely know the difference between Ronaldo and Ronaldinho and I would rather watch The Big Green than watch an MLS game. Additionally, I don’t understand why the Los Angeles Galaxy was going to play a team from England in the first place and I don’t like games where 2-0 is practically a blowout.

Men's Lacrosse Blog for the Semifinal Game Against Duke

Pregame Thoughts

I am watching this one at home. I will be going to the final if Cornell wins today. So that means that instead of making fun of things that are happening at the game, I will mostly be making fun of ESPN2’s coverage of the game. As far as the game itself, I think the key for Cornell is to stop Matt Danowski and Zack Greer, Duke’s two best attackmen. Mitch Belisle will most likely match up against Danowski, and we will see how the Red’s team defense is able to stop these two huge weapons. By the way, the coverage on ESPN2 has been pretty much DUKE DUKE DUKE DUKE DUKE DUKE DUKE Cornell Hopkins DUKE DUKE DUKE Cornell Hopkins DUKE DUKE DUKE DUKE DUKE DUKE DUKE. I am not even sure if the commentators know who Duke is playing. The announcer just also completely butchered Max Seibald’s name. He pronounced it like “Siboald.”

Men's Lacrosse Opening-Round Blog

Pregame Thoughts:

Here we go. It is a great day, and Cornell is going to make the final push. It has won all 13 games this season, but it needs to win four more to get the grand prize. Standing in its way in the first round is Towson, a team that lost to Delaware in its conference final. The Red somehow earned the No. 4 seed in this tournament, despite going undefeated during the regular season. Frankly, I do not know what else it could have done, except a harder schedule. However, with six Ivy games, this is not an easy task. Cornell played Duke, Princeton, Notre Dame and Syracuse. It is not the Red’s fault that Syracuse had a down year. Despite Cornell’s low strength of schedule, it had a very high RPI (second in the nation). At the very worst, the Red should have gotten a two or three seed. A four is just absurd.

Diary Blog from Penn, Part 1

Freshman Charlie Hatch will be diary blogging his experiences at the Penn Relays here at cornellsun.com. The Red will be facing some of the nation's top teams at UPenn's Franklin Field.

And so, dear readers, it is that time of the season again, oh yes, the ever popular Penn Relays Carnival (sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts). 112 years of history lay behind us as the Cornell Big Red proceeds toward another key point in the season.

We Need More Days Like This Past Saturday

Saturday was everything Cornell should be.

With the Red claiming dominance over Princeton and the sun claiming supremacy over the recent winter weather conditions, there were very few things that could have made me happier (one of them being my good ol' fashion pre-gaming session). As I sat down in the crowd, shades and all, I remarked to my friends how great this day was for me, for the lacrosse team and for the student body.

Michael Mix's Blog for the 10-6 Men's Lacrosse Victory over Princeton

Pregame Thoughts:
Here we go, biggest game of the season. Great weather, great crowd, it does not get better than this. Princeton has a great defense, so my key player of the game for Cornell is junior John Glynn. Glynn seems to thrive when the defense focuses on David Mitchell and Eric Pittard, so I look for him to have a big game today.

Questioning Imus and Us as Listeners Part Two

Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer described his words as, “deplorable, despicable, and abominable and unconscionable.”

The Democratic National Committee released a statement yesterday saying, "Divisive, discriminatory and derogatory language, including the recent comments made by Don Imus, have no place in our nation's discourse or on our nation's airwaves.”

My Take on Men's Lacrosse's Epic 16-15 Victory Over Syracuse

I really wanted to lead my article with one word - "Wow." This was one of the most exciting sporting events I have ever been to, and certainly have covered. When Cornell scored the winning goal, it took every fiber of my being not to jump for joy in the press box, but I stayed unbiased. Unfortunately, now I have a lot of pent-up energy, and I probably need to hit something. It is 12:50 at night, and I just finished writing the recap, and I want to go to bed, but first I have to organize my thoughts about this incredible game, from gameplay to fan issues. So here it goes.

Questioning Imus and Us as Listeners

WFAN and MSNBC radio host Don Imus crossed the line on his April 4th broadcast of “Imus in the Morning,” … again. Imus, a member of the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame, has made a living out of making derogatory comments about blacks, jews, and women amongst many other things. Wednesday’s verbal assault against the Rutgers’ women’s basketball team referring to them as “nappy headed ho’s” was just another episode of Imus’ ignorance towards minority groups.
