Rant Against Hollywood

October 16, 2009 - 2:30am
By Gabriel Dobbs

Harvey Weinstein, a titan of the silver screen, the man behind many of the greatest films of the last decade, convincingly stated, “Hollywood has the best moral compass.” Come again, Harvey? Celebrities might protest the Iraq war with their Oscar speeches; they might dedicate time to charitable causes and maybe every single member of the Screen Actors Guild drives a Prius and eats organically grown legumes for lunch, but that definitely does not make Mel Gibson my Mother Theresa. Case and point: Hollywood’s reaction to the arrest of longtime fugitive and film director Roman Polanski.

I Just Can’t (One Night) Stand It

October 15, 2009 - 2:59am
By Jess H.

Congratulations — you did it. You got that guy or girl of your dreams to agree to come back to your place and sleep with you. Lucky, lucky. However, there is etiquette that one must adhere to when participating in a one night stand — one night standiquette, if you will. It will help you avoid making the awkward pre-walk of shame morning-breath goodbye kiss any more awkward (assuming that your partner was kind enough to stay the night).

Slopes Day: A Tale of Two Titties

Who decided that titty-fucking was cool? Did Sinatra used to finish his lowball of whiskey just to take home that dame across the bar for some good ol’ slipping and sliding between a pair of tig ol’ biddies? Initial research (i.e. I did not in any way attempt to research this) has been inconclusive as to Sinatra’s inter-mammary predilections, but this I do know: Everything about titty-fucking is just plain wrong — from its name, to the act itself, to the Google Images result when I type in the term (well, actually, the search results are pretty good).

A Call to Action or a Recognition of Past Actions?

The Nobel Committee’s decision to award President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize calls into question the purpose of this prestigious award. If the prize serves to recognize concrete action and tangible efforts towards peace, the committee failed to adhere to these measures. Yet, if the committee sought to praise intent and catalyze future action, their decision was dead on.

Line Up for Flu Shots!

October 9, 2009 - 3:02am
By Cynthia Santos

All university students who shadow at a clinical site should strongly consider getting immunized for both H1N1 and seasonal flu as soon as the vaccine becomes available, if it is not already mandated for you. In New York State all healthcare workers are being mandated to get both vaccines for seasonal flu and H1N1. This includes physicians, nurses, social workers, laboratory technicians, housekeeping, security/transportation services, construction workers, and even hospital volunteers. Technically, even construction workers and food vendors need to get vaccinated now. Thus far, New York State is the only state to have passed this mandate. Earlier this week, nurse union leaders led demonstrations in Washington D.C., claiming that this mandate is unethical.

Sex Offenders as Commodities — Really?

October 9, 2009 - 3:02am
By Greg Demers

I’m always impressed by the variety of items for sale on Ebay. I’ve seen air guitars, chewing gum used by Madonna and even a ghost being sold by a woman who would do anything to convince her son that there weren’t monsters in his closet. One thing I haven’t seen, however, is a sex offender for sale. Yet, later this term, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments about whether Congress can regulate the commercial distribution of sex offenders.

Liberals = Dreadlocks, Pot, Veganism, Hybrid Cars

My family is liberal. When I say liberal, I don’t mean they jumped on the Obama bandwagon in ’08. I mean really, really freakin’ liberal.

Inconsistencies, Distrust

How would you feel? How would you feel if you were randomly and unexpectedly called into your boss’s office one day and told that you were being moved? No questions asked. You have two weeks to move from the place that you have been working and making a living at for 20 years. I would feel completely disrespected, but at the same time, I would feel powerless. And I would feel powerless because a large institution treated me with so much cruelty, that my 20 years of service to this institution and to an entire community garnered no respect. Not even enough respect to give me any sort of choice whatsoever.

In Desperate Search For a Worthy Cause

The time is ripe to talk about Teach For America. A couple of weeks ago TFA held an on-campus information session. The photos, the data, the stories … the whole thing made me want to stand up and salute something, anything, with a lone tear running down my cheek. On Monday night, I attended an address by Michelle Rhee ’92, D.C. School Chancellor and former Baltimore TFA corps member. Despite the September info-session’s plentiful pizza and pictures, Rhee won the contest for most inspiring hour — ever. She’s amazing, but more on that later.

Eliminating Empty Galleries, Empty Rhetoric

I previously wrote about the Student Assembly's community clause, which, in a bid to increase student participation at its meetings, would grant voting rights to students in attendance. Since then, I took the plunge and attended my first-ever S.A. meeting. It is not exactly on the list of 161 things to do before you graduate, but I can now say I did it.
