Baseball Maintains Streak with 7-5 Win

Mitchell Drucker  —  Apr 15, 2009

The baseball team extended its winning streak to three games after a 7-5 victory over LeMoyne College in Syracuse yesterday. The Red scored one run each in the first, third and fifth innings before exploding for three runs in the seventh. Hitters Brian Billigen, Mickey Brodsky and Brandon Lee each notched a pair of hits for the Cornell offense, and Mike Carroll pitched two innings of relief work to pick up the win.

In the top of the first inning, a Frank Hager single that scored senior Nathan Ford from second base enabled to Red to get out to a 1-0 lead. However, that lead did not last long as the Dolphins tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Cornell freshman catcher Brandon Lee explained the importance of getting on the scoreboard in the first inning.

The Cornell baseball team will hit the road on Tuesday to take on LeMoyne College. The Red (8-17, 5-7), which is rounding into form after a rough start to the season, took three of four from the University of Pennsylvania over the weekend.

Baseball on the Rise in Ancient Eight Standings

The baseball team rebounded from last weekend’s disappointing losses with an encouraging week of play. Playing within the division for the first time this season, the Red (8-17, 5-7 Ivy) took three of four against the visiting Quakers (11-19, 1-9 Ivy). The strong weekend completed a 4-1 week, which should help erase memories of last weekend’s 0-4 disaster.

Baseball Looks To Boost Morale Against Quakers

After surrendering two game-winning walk-off home runs to Harvard and 27 runs to Dartmouth last weekend, Cornell strongly needs an ego boost within the Ivy League. This weekend should provide just the tonic the doctor ordered as the Red hosts the winless Quakers. The two teams will play a two-day four-game series beginning tomorrow at Hoy Field.

Red Looks to Regain Momentum

The baseball team will need a short memory and some long underwear for today’s game. The Red (4-16, 2-6 Ivy) will host the Binghamton Bearcats (9-10). Cornell will try to move past the disappointment of last weekend, which saw the team lose four crucial games to conference foes. In order for the Red to have a chance to break its losing streak, the weather must give the team a chance to play. Ithaca is expected to see snow and temperatures in the 30s today.

“We have a pretty good chance of playing tomorrow, especially with the turf field,” said senior shortstop Scott Hardinger. “Assuming that there’s no snow or heavy rain, we should be able to play.”

Cold weather is nothing new to the Red.

Baseball Drops Four on Roadtrip

Matthew Manacher  —  Apr 7, 2009

This was not one of the finer weekends for the baseball program. After dropping a pair of games on Saturday at Harvard, not once, but twice via walk-off home runs, the Cornell offense exploded for 29 runs on Sunday only to lose both games of a doubleheader at Dartmouth.

The Red (4-16, 2-6 Ivy) fell, 6-5, to the Crimson in Game 1 and 7-5 in Game 2. On Sunday, the undefeated Green slugged its way to a 13-8 victory in the opener and a 14-11 victory in the nightcap.Best foot forward: Senior infielder Scott Hardinger was 6-for-8 against Dartmouth on April 5.Best foot forward: Senior infielder Scott Hardinger was 6-for-8 against Dartmouth on April 5.

Baseball Preps For Ivy League Road Trip

Zack Slabotsky  —  Apr 3, 2009

The Red (4-12, 2-2 Ivy) will continue its Ivy League schedule with a road trip this weekend. Cornell will face Harvard in two games tomorrow and then will travel to New Hampshire for a doubleheader against Dartmouth on Sunday.

Beginning tomorrow at noon, the Red will take on host Harvard (4-17, 2-2 Ivy). Last season, the Red won the first half of a doubleheader against Harvard on a walk-off single by current senior shortstop Scott Hardinger. The Red lost a 2-1 contest to the Crimson later that day.

Tomorrow, the Red will send sophomore Jadd Schmeltzer to the mound for its first game.

Baseball Splits Twinbill With Bulldogs at Hoy Field

Holden Steinhauer  —  Apr 1, 2009

The Red continued on its path back to respectability in Ivy League play by splitting a Tuesday home-field doubleheader with conference foe Yale.

Cornell dropped the first game, 3-2, but picked up a win in the second match, 4-2, bringing its record to 4-12 overall and 2-2 in Ivy play, while the Bulldogs sit at 6-9 and 2-2.

“I definitely think that we’re playing a lot looser now,” said sophomore first baseman Jadd Schmeltzer after the win. “We’re starting to get to that level where, you know what, we’re going out there and we’re confident, and we’re getting ready to play the best baseball we can.”

The Evolution of the Closer and why Saves are Meaningless

Jonathan Westman  —  Apr 1, 2009

In 1959, reliever Elroy Face went 18-1 in 94 innings for the Pittsburgh Pirates. A year later, Hall-of-Fame Chicago sportswriter Jerome Holtzman observed that 10 of Face’s victories had come after he had blown a lead and the Pirates offense rallied to win the game. Holtzman also noticed that Cubs relievers Bill Henry and Don Elston had preserved far more leads than their Pittsburgh counterpart, yet carried pedestrian win-loss records to show for their efforts. Thus, the save was born. Nine years after Holtzman introduced the term, it became an official statistic. Since then, the save has given notoriety to relievers and changed the entire landscape of late-inning baseball.

Cornell Hopes Momentum Will Carry Over From Saturday Win

Matthew Manacher  —  Mar 31, 2009

It might be fair to say that Cornell has moved on since Yale pieced together a walk-off home run in Game 1 and a two-run rally in the final inning of Game 2 to sweep last year’s doubleheader on April 6. However, last season’s heartache will certainly be in the back of the players’ minds as the Red hosts the Bulldogs today at noon in a midweek twinbill.Mr, Utility: Sophomore Mickey Brodsky plays first base occasionally, but he will be on the mound against Yale in Game 1.Mr, Utility: Sophomore Mickey Brodsky plays first base occasionally, but he will be on the mound against Yale in Game 1.
