Relax, Mr. President, You're Falling Out of Touch

April 2, 2009 - 11:00pm

In a world where technology becomes obsolete only a few months after it hits the shelves, how long will it take for the shiny new President to become outdated and out-of-touch?

Last week the White House held an online town hall meeting, inviting Americans to submit their questions and concerns for the President’s consideration. Overwhelmingly, the question most frequently asked was: “With over 1 out of 30 Americans controlled by the penal system, why not legalize, control and tax marijuana to change the failed war on drugs into a money-making, money-saving boost to the economy? Do we really need that many victimless criminals?”

When I told my friends that I was going to go see Coraline over the weekend, most of them either had no idea what I was talking about — “What’s a Coraline?” — or were prepared to ridicule me for my affinity for animated films — “Isn’t that a kid movie?” And while the film is indeed an animated feature that primarily caters to the young at heart, this is a film that transcends all age barriers, as Coraline is an enchanting picture distinguished by its unique amalgamation of youthful spirit and whimsical charm. Characterized by its eye-popping visuals and mystical story line, this is a tightly-focused movie that keeps you engaged throughout.

Airports testing radar that could spot birds

January 26, 2009 - 8:12pm
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Some of the nation’s busiest airports will soon begin testing experimental radar systems designed to track flocks of birds and help pilots avoid the type of collision believed to have crippled a US Airways jet nearly two weeks ago.

Proponents say air traffic controllers could someday use the technology to delay takeoffs, reroute flights before they leave the ground, and perhaps even radio warnings to pilots to take evasive action.

The new technology uses a combination of inexpensive marine radar antennas, much like the kind used on fishing boats, and powerful computer software to monitor birds as they gather and soar as far as six miles away from an airport.

In a move to smooth the transition to having fully electronic health records, Gannett Health Services recently implemented a state of the art radiography system. The Radiology Information System/ Picture Archiving and Communications System for managing medical images is providing faster service and more efficient doctor-patient communication.

The transition to the Kodak DR 3500 occurred after three years of research and planning to seek the best value in replacing outdated technology and to streamline radiologic images with other fully electronic health records. Following a period of renovations to the radiology suite and training for radiographers and clinicians, the system came into use

in January.
