Cornell Athletes in the Pros

Sun Staff  —  Jul 19, 2009

Let’s not kid ourselves. While the name Ivy League came from an early sports conference, these days “Ivy” conjures thoughts of academia, not athletics.

But that doesn’t mean that an Ivy League school cannot produce some of the finest athletes in the world.

In fact, Cornell itself has produced a prominent list of professional athletes.

One famous Cornellian is running back Ed Marinaro ’72. As great a runner as Marinaro was, he is probably better known for his time on television than for his time on the gridiron.

M. Lax Seeks Outright Ivy Title vs. Brown

Meredith Bennet...  —  Apr 24, 2009

Good things so often come in three’s: three’s a charm, the Three Stooges, Tic-Tac-Toe. But this Saturday in Providence, R.I., the men’s lacrosse team hopes for its own special three — three outright conference titles in the past five years. The No. 2/4 Red, riding high from its 10-7 upset victory over then-No. 1 Princeton last Saturday, will be fighting for the chance to take sole possession of the Ivy League championship by beating the No. 13/13 Bears, currently in second place in the Ancient Eight standings.

“For us it’s such a big game, we want to have an outright Ivy title,” said senior midfielder Max Seibald. “When we share the title we actually don’t get to keep the Ivy trophy for the entire year.”

Women’s Lax Upsets No. 10 Vanderbilt

Sun Staff  —  Apr 22, 2009

Upsets seem to have been a common trend this week for Cornell lacrosse, as the No. 20 women’s team took down No. 10-ranked Vanderbilt, 11-4, yesterday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. Both teams now boast identical records at 9-5, and with the win the Red has guaranteed itself a winning season –– its ninth in 12 years under head coach Jenny Graap.

Sophomore Libby Johnson led the Red (3-3 Ivy) offensively with five goals on six shots –– outscoring Vanderbilt’s entire team. Senior Jessica Wiegand and freshman Katie Kirk also contributed two goals apiece.
