Me, Myself and I

Hello, O readers of Local Yarns. Today I will speak on one of my favorite local topics — myself. I have decided that Cornellians should have a thorough understanding of the enigma that is the local family because they may very well become part of one themselves someday. Therefore, I shall give you a profile of a representative local family: namely, my own.

Part One: Man and woman attend graduate school in Ithaca, NY. In my family, this was both Ithaca College and Cornell University, and then just Ithaca College. My parents met at I.C., where they both got their masters degrees, while looking for ping-pong partners (no joke).

Eat Pasta, Drink Wine

There is a restaurant in Collegetown that is near and dear to my heart, perhaps more so than any other in the greater Ithaca area. It was the site of many a childhood dinner outing, exciting not only because the food was yummy, but even more so because of the chance to see Peter, who would always stop by our table with a free bottle of wine and ask each of us how we were doing. He especially liked to ask my younger brother Charlie about his soccer exploits, and there was definitely a point in the ’90s when every waiter in the restaurant knew my brother’s name. (Just in case you’re curious, Peter, Charlie is playing varsity as a sophomore and is the leading scorer on the team.) So, where is this benevolent restaurant, you ask?

Ten Square (Sunny) Miles

Welcome again, one and all, to the illustrious Local Yarns. For our first week back in action, I’ve put together something a little different for you — instead of a mini-bio of a super awesome Ithacan, we’re having a lesson on the culture of the super awesome Ithaca itself. Get excited. This is “10 things to do/reasons why you absolutely must spend a summer in this place you normally call home only when stressing over prelim after prelim.”

What's Cookin', Good Lookin'?

So far this semester, you’ve heard about the Quesadilla Man, the knitting shop and the townies: cheesy (that is, cheese that you eat, not ‘cheese’ that makes you groan during crappy romantic comedies), crafty and Cornellian, respectively. I’ve saved the sugar for last.

Now, strictly speaking, Choklay Lhamo makes soup, a dish typically devoid of sugar. But Choklay herself is so sweet that I’m positive she’s been taking in excess sugar from somewhere (see, that line is the kind of cheese that makes you groan). Seriously though, I liked the famous Temple of Zeus chef as soon as I met her — she has a sweetness to her that just makes you want to smile.

So, in trying to decide what to write about for this week, I thought about what fun it would be to just write about myself (hey everyone — be my friend!!), I’m a local, right?
