Men’s Rowing Rebounds With Dual Cup Wins

After losing its No. 1 rank following losses to then-No.4 Princeton and then-No .2 Yale, the No. 4 men’s lightweight rowing team bounced back this weekend and swept its varsity races to win the Greiger Cup over Columbia and MIT. The heavyweight team was successful as well, bringing home the Howard Smith Cup. The women raced at home Friday, but failed to win the Dunn Bowl.

“We’re pretty satisfied,” said senior William Boyce. “We shuffled our lineup a lot coming into the race and we’re happy with the way it turned out.”

Rowers Looking to Bounce Back This Week

Both the men’s heavyweight and lightweight rowing teams are looking to bounce back after tough races last weekend, while the women are trying to keep their momentum after defeating Penn and Rutgers for the Class of ’89 Points Plate.

The men’s heavyweight squad will travel to Princeton, Pa., and New Brunswick, N.J. to race twice on the road in the same weekend for the first time this season since the Pac-10 Invitational.

“We’ve done a lot of race preparation for the week,” said senior Andrew Carr. “This weekend we have back-to-back dual meets and will have another opportunity to show the strength and depth of our team.”

First, the team will compete in the Princeton-hosted dual meet with Yale and will then race against a strong Rutgers squad on the following day.

Crew Stays Home, Goes to Yale

This weekend, the men’s lightweight rowing team will have its hands full as it will travel to Princeton for a dual meet against Princeton and Rutgers and then travel to New Haven to face Yale on the same day.

The men’s heavyweight and women’s rowing teams will both stay in Ithaca for their own dual meets this weekend against Navy and Syracuse and Penn and Rutgers, respectively.

“It’s going to be a pretty big challenge to have to race Princeton on their home course and then get back in the van and drive to Yale and race them on their home course,” said men’s lightweight senior captain Matt Kochem. “We’ll make the most of everything regardless of what happens, but we really want to win this one, though, because it will show how strong we are.”

M. and W. Crew Look Forward to Nationals

Both men’s heavyweight and the women’s rowing teams had a chance to showcase their best stuff as they started off their spring seasons with races against No. 1 teams in the country.

Men’s heavyweight competed against the top-ranked California team and the women’s squad raced against the top-ranked Yale Bulldogs. Men’s lightweight are two-time defending national champions and are one of the best teams in the country going into the spring.

The men’s heavyweight rowing team started off their spring with an invite to the Pac-10 Invitational and used it to show the teams on the West Coast how talented the Red really is.

Rowers Return From California Full of Confidence

The men’s heavyweight rowing team will stay in Ithaca this weekend to face Georgetown while women’s rowing will start off its spring season by facing Syracuse and No. 1-ranked Yale.

Heavyweight is coming off a successful showing in the highly competitive Pac-10 Challenge where it faced off with some of the top boats in the country.

The men’s varsity eight boat defeated UCLA by over 27 seconds but was not as successful against Stanford. The second varsity eight defeated Stanford earlier in the day by over seven seconds but fell to UCLA in the afternoon. Both boats lost to California the next day.

Heavyweights Eager to Start Spring Season

Traditionally, the men’s heavyweight rowing team starts off its spring season by competing in the Ithaca Regatta. This year, however, the team will experience a change of pace after receiving an invitation to the selective Pac-10 Invitational where the squad will compete against California and Stanford.

“There is tenacity in this team,” said senior captain Dan Holodnik. “The guys are excited because they know that there is something for us to show to everyone.”

The heavyweights are coming off a strong season last year which saw two boats qualify for the IRA grand finals including the second varsity eight placing third in the National championship.

Despite the strong performance last season, the Red still wants to see more improvement this year.

Red Will Open Season on Two Coasts This Weekend

Men’s heavyweight rowing has already gotten its spring started off on the right foot, or should I say oar, by getting invited to compete in the prestigious Pac-10 Invitational in San Francisco.

“We’re thrilled to get invited to the Pac-10 Invitational this year,” said senior heavyweight captain Dan Holodnik. “These teams don’t see us too often and they don’t know what to expect. We have something to prove.”

The Red will be sending its top-2 varsity boats to the tournament, which is also called the Windermere Classic, and competing against teams such as Stanford on Saturday and California on Sunday.

Track Stars Take National Stage at NCAA Championships

While most Cornell students head off to enjoy Spring Break, three Cornellians will be going to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the NCAA indoor track championships.

Junior women’s track star Jeomi Maduka has already made numerous headlines, including a featured article in USA Today.

Maduka was named Ivy League Player of the Year yesterday for her performance on the court, leading the women’s basketball team to the NCAA tournament.

That wasn’t a typo. She’s potentially going to the NCAA tournament for basketball and track. Maduka qualified for NCAAs in the long jump with the eighth best jump in the country.

“It was pretty exciting to see her article in USA Today,” said men’s head coach Nathan Taylor.

Mixed Weekend Results for Harriers

This weekend the men’s and women’s track teams headed for Boston to compete in the IC4A/ECAC Indoor Championships. The men finished 12th while the women scored 27 points to earn its seventh-place finish out of 53 teams in the ECAC at the tournament.

UConn scored 60.5 points to win the meet while Seton Hall and Syracuse finished second and third respectively.

“I think our team did really well,” said sophomore Lindsay Broyhill. “A lot of girls set personal records.”

The 4x800-meter relay team of Broyhill, junior Megan Rae and sophomores Caroline Heidt and Kerri Lyons gave the Red its best finish of the weekend after running a 9:02.36, which placed them second in the event.

Harriers Prepare for IC4A

Heading into the IC4A Indoor Championships this weekend, the men’s track team got all the momentum it needed after winning the Ivy League Championship with a record score of 205, including a record-winning margin of 56 points over rival Princeton.

The men got the revenge they were looking for after Princeton defeated them by a mere three points in last season’s Ivy League Championship.

“It was really amazing to be a part of this great performance,” said junior Garrett Huyler. “Our team set the record for the most points at Heps and for the largest margin of victory at Heps. It was great to see the entire team do well and set all those records, especially in front of all the alumni and all the people watching.”

M. and W. Track Set to Sweep Heps in Barton

Only one thing separated the men’s and women’s track teams from both claming the Ivy League title last season: 1/100 of a second.

The women were victorious and got to feel the satisfaction of achieving their season-long goal, but the men were left with a horrible, lingering taste in their mouths that they’ve been longing to get rid of since falling short exactly 368 days ago.

Good form: Track will host Heps this weekend in front of cheering alumni.

The culprit of all the dismay for the men’s squad was none other than Ancient Eight rival Princeton, which has again been neck and neck with the Red this season as the top-2 track powerhouses of the Ivies.
Red Fine Tunes Technique At Marc Deneault Invite

This weekend the men’s and women’s track teams will stay at home to compete in the Marc Deneault Invitational and face the final opportunity to fine tune the squad and make preparations before Heps.

“The only goal we really have is to fill the other three Heps qualifying spots,” said men’s head coach Nathan Taylor. “We’re allowed to compete with 33 players at Heps and 30 have made it so far. We just want to try to fill in the last few spots.”

The Marc Deneault Invitational is unscored and will consist of 23 teams.

“In pole vault we have four guys who are trying to qualify with similar season bests,” Taylor said. “We probably won’t be able to take all of them so there will be a lot of competition in that event.”

Track Attempts to Carry Momentum Into Heps

The men’s and women’s track teams will face their final sprint this week before the start of the Indoor Championship season, which will commence with the Cornell-hosted Heptagonal Championships.

“One of our goals for the year is to win Heps and be Ivy League Champions,” said junior Jimmy Wyner. “We want to keep improving and become one of the most recognized teams in the league.”

Harriers Compete in Prestigious Events

Coming off an impressive showing in their backyard at the Cornell Open, the men’s and women’s track teams will travel to New York City to compete in the Lafayette and Rider co-hosted event at The Armory and will then face a strong field at the Robert J. Kane Invitational back here in Ithaca on Sunday.

The Red hosted the Cornell Open last weekend and saw the women and men win 13 and 11 events respectively including eight ECAC qualifiers for the women and 11 IC4A qualifiers for the men.

Track Squads Prepare To Host Cornell Opener

There’s no place like home for the men’s and women’s track teams as they host the Cornell Open today and tomorrow. It’s the first time the two squads have remained in Itahca since the Cornell Relays on Dec. 1. The Red will host in-state rival Syracuse, among other team.

Fortunately for both the men and women, they will be facing an Orange squad at less than full strength. Part of the Syracuse squads will be in New York City for the weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.

Harriers Flex Muscles At Sykes-Sabock Cup

In their largest competition of the year so far, the men’s and women’s track teams continued their success and showed their strength against a nationally competitive field at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup.

The women placed third out of the 13 teams and were highlighted by junior Maria Matos’ NCAA Provisional Qualifying 61-7 1/2 throw to place third in the weight and put her in third place all-time in that category at Cornell.

The women also had 12 ECAC qualifiers and 11 top-5 finishes.

“I like what’s happening so far this season,” said women’s head coach Lou Duesing. “So many people are setting personal bests and breaking school records.”

M. Track’s Huyler Soars Over Competition

The men’s and women’s track teams continued their record-breaking years at the Harvard Select Invitational last weekend. The men produced three men’s NCAA Provisional qualifiers in the same meet for the first time taking first place. The women fell just short of matching the men’s first-place finish, slipping into second place after leading heading into the final event.

“Every meet is a stepping stone for the championship events at the end of the season,” said men’s head coach Nathan Taylor. “We have many guys performing well and qualifying for IC4As and the NCAAs already, which is very exciting.”

Track Challenges Harvard, Brown

Coming off wins at the Upstate Challenge, the men’s and women’s track teams will travel to Cambridge, Mass., to compete in the Harvard Select Invitational against Ivy League rivals Harvard and Brown.

The Red, who has yet to see either upcoming opponent so far this season, has serious momentum going into the meet after record-breaking performances at both the Penn State Relays and the Upstate Challenge to start the season.

Players emphasize that Harvard and Brown cannot be overlooked, however, expressing that they must take each meet one at a time.

Track's Quick Start Paced by NCAA Qualifiers

After only one event, coaches and players on the men’s and women’s track teams seem to be happy and satisfied with the quick start to their seasons.

Leading the women were two NCAA provisional qualifying performances and 10 ECAC qualifying performances at the Penn State Relays. The women then added another seven ECAC qualifying performances at the Upstate Challenge this past weekend.

“Across the board people are doing good things and are excited about the year,” said women’s head coach Lou Duesing. “I like what’s happened so far this season and now we want to keep the momentum and expand on the positives.”

Junior Jeomi Maduka led the women with two NCAA provisional qualifying performances.

Harriers Excel at Penn St.

While most students got to enjoy their final weekend without tests, the men’s and women’s track teams passed their first test of the new semester with flying colors. Both squads won their first scored meet of the season, the Upstate Challenge.

The wins followed strong performances by both squads at the Southern Tier Collegiate Open and Penn St. Relays over the holiday break.

Junior Garrett Huyler highlighted the Upstate Challenge, hosted by Cornell in Barton Hall on Saturday. Huylyer soared to an indoor school record of 7-1 in the high jump, making him an NCAA Provisional qualifier.

“I’m really excited,” Huyler said. “It’s nice to do well after all the practice and hard work. Our results really showed the effort we put in as a team.”

Youth Movement Displays Depth of Red

Coming off one of its most successful seasons in recent memory, the women’s track team hopes to continue its success as it welcomes back a strong core of talent.

The successful season included winning the Heps in both indoor and outdoor track, which led to 15 runners qualifying for the NCAA Eastern Regionals. The Red then went on to finish seventh out of more than 100 teams at the NCAA Eastern Regional championships and also qualified seven women for the NCAA Outdoor Championships including two who gained All-American status, Morgan Uceny ’07 and junior Jeomi Maduka.

Uceny was one of the many graduating seniors from last year’s senior-dominated team. This year, the Red must rely on its depth to replace many of its key losses.

Field Hockey Preview

With some help, the field hockey team has the opportunity to finish the season as Ivy League champions with a win in its final game against Dartmouth.

Although Dartmouth (6-10, 1-5 Ivy) has struggled somewhat this season, the Red (9-7, 4-2 Ivy) cannot afford to take the Green lightly. Following a 4-2 win over Siena, Cornell is currently tied for second in the Ivy standings.

“Dartmouth is a very tough team and we know that it’s not going to be an easy game,” said senior co-captain Katie Bradshaw. “The Ivy League is really competitive and we know anything can happen. We just have to focus on this last game before thinking about any of the scenarios.”

Field Hockey Splits Against Non-Ivy Foes

In its final home game of the season the field hockey team honored its two seniors, Lizzie Goldblatt and co-captain Katie Bradshaw, and the two players returned the favor by giving head coach Donna Hornibrook her 200th win.

This weekend the Red played its final two home games of the season against Lock Haven and Siena. The Red started the weekend off with a 3-1 loss to a strong Lock Haven squad but it was able to bounce back Sunday with a 4-2 win over Siena.

Coming off a Northeast Conference title clinching 7-1 win over St. Francis, the Lock Haven Lady Eagles came into Ithaca soaring with a 14-5 overall record.

Field Hockey Upsets No. 19 Syracuse, 3-2, on Road

In one of the biggest upsets in recent program history, the field hockey team toppled the 19th-ranked Syracuse Orange last nigh, 3-2.

The win was the Red’s second in a row after losing four straight at home. The triumph also marked the squad’s first victory over a ranked opponent since 2002 and the second over Syracuse in program history — a span of 29 games.

The Red was outshot 19-11 and Syracuse had nine penalty corners to the Orange’s four. But the Red had the advantage on the scoreboard after freshman Catie DeStio netted the game-winning goal. DeStio also assisted the Red’s first goal to junior Brenna Gulotta.

Sophomore Natalie Appleton scored the second Red goal, the first of her career, to put Cornell up 2-0.

Statistics Favor Red, Scoreboard Favors Bison

Dorothy once uttered, “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.”

While Dorothy was saved by wishing for home, the field hockey team might just wish it could go any place else but home after dropping its fifth-straight home contest in a 1-0 loss to Bucknell last night. It was the team’s fourth-straight loss overall.

The Bison came into the game with a 6-7 overall record and was able to improve to .500 on the season after defeating the Red (6-6, 3-2 Ivy).

The Red held the statistical advantage over the Bison in shots, saves and time of possession, but was not able to hold the advantage in the most important category — goals.

Cornell outshot Bucknell 12-8 during the game and held the 3-2 margin in saves.

Field Hockey Faces First Ranked Opponent of Season

After coming off a three-game winning streak, the field hockey team lost two close games to Harvard and Colgate and must now regroup as it heads into an important face-off against No. 17 Albany (11-3, 2-0 America East), its first ranked opponent this season.

This isn’t the first time the Red (6-4, 3-2 Ivy) has lost two straight close games this season. After starting strong and winning its first three games of the season, the Red lost two straight overtime games against Penn and Rutgers. This time the Red lost in overtime to Harvard and then fell, 4-2, against Colgate.

After the two overtime losses to Penn and Rutgers, the players were adamant about not letting those losses hold them back and they feel the same way about these two losses to Harvard and Colgate.

Ivy Unbeaten Harvard Comes to Ithaca

While everyone leaves campus to enjoy a short break from the rigors of Cornell, the field hockey team will stay right here in Ithaca and play one of its biggest matches of the season against a Harvard team that is undefeated in Ivy play. Before classes resume, the Red will face Colgate as well.

The Crimson is coming off a 2-0 victory against Northeastern and currently sits at 6-4 (2-0 Ivy). Its two Ivy victories came against Penn and Brown by margins of 3-1 and 4-1, respectively. The Red (6-2, 3-1) lost a close overtime game against Penn and has yet to face Brown this season.

Field Hockey Scores Four, Beats Tigers for First Time Since 1990

It hasn’t been done in 17 years. But that didn’t stop the field hockey team from staging an improbable comeback this weekend when it defeated the heavily favored and league-leading Princeton Tigers.

“We’re really excited about the win,” said junior Abbi Horn. “I’m really happy with the way the team played. We’re starting to learn from each other and trust each other. We’ve finally learned to take it to the next level.”

The odds were definitely stacked up against the Red. Cornell was out-shot 22-13. They were down 2-0 at halftime. And it hasn’t beaten Princeton since 1990. But all of that didn’t matter when junior Abbi Horn scored the final goal that gave the Red a long awaited 4-3 victory.

Field Hockey Eyes Ivy Crown With Young Talent

After a strong second-place showing in the Ivy League last season, the field hockey team is eager to showcase its talent as it heads into another highly competitive year. The team is heavily eying the Ivy crown that it was so close to attaining last season, but the women want to make sure they take this season one game at a time.

“Our goal on any given day is to go out there and give it our best effort,” said head coach Donna Hornibrook. “Our expectations from day one are to improve each game and if we are able to do that, then we will be a good team this year.”

After an impressive 3-0 start to the season the field hockey team was on the wrong side of the 8-ball this weekend as the squad lost two straight overtime games against Penn and Rutgers. The Red, however, is determined to bounce back when they face Yale under the Friday night lights.

“I have tremendous confidence in our team’s ability to bounce back,” said head coach Donna Hornibrook. “Our expectations since day one have been to improve after each and every game. If we do that we will be a good team.

Field Hockey Falls Twice in Overtime

It was a heartbreaking weekend for the field hockey team as it was on the losing end of two overtime games against Ivy rival Penn and Rutgers, 3-2, and 1-0, respectively.

“I think we played really well,” said senior co-captain Katie Bradshaw. “Unfortunately we lost in both overtimes, but we’re a resilient team and we’re not going to let those two loses hold us back.”

The Red started off its weekend by traveling to Philadelphia and suffering its first loss off the season by a 3-2 margin. Penn came into the game with a 1-4 record while the Red was riding a 3-0 start. However, the Quakers were able to force overtime late in the game and win on a penalty shot.

Early Victories Give Field Hockey Startup Momentum

Along with the anticipation of the new Kanye West and 50 Cent albums next week, Cornell students have something else to look forward to; field hockey.

After winning its first two matches of the season, the Red now has plenty of momentum as they go into important matches against Columbia and Penn in the next couple of weeks.

Over the weekend, the Red defeated Lehigh, 2-1, and then traveled to Lafayette and beat them, 2-0.

“That really gives us a lot of confidence,” said junior co-captain Belen Martinez. “We want to keep winning and playing as hard as we can.”

Field Hockey Set to Play Lehigh, Lafayette on Road

With the first full week of classes under way, the field hockey team will get its season started with a two-game road trip against Patriot League foes Lehigh and Lafayette.

The Red started off last season with victories, 3-1 and 2-0 respectively, over the two squads, and hope to repeat the fast start in 2007.

Historically the Red has done very well against Lehigh, amassing a 14-1-1 record. However, the Red has not been as successful in the past against Lafayette finishing 4-12-2 in all past matches.

Field Hockey Looks to Earn Ivy Title This Season

After a strong second place showing in the Ivies last year, the field hockey team has become more experienced with hopes to turn that second place finish into an Ivy crown.

“We want to win the Ivy League,” said junior co-captain Belen Martinez. “But we’re going to take it one game at a time.”

The Red can aspire to higher expectations this season since last year’s squad has been supplemented by the new additions of a strong incoming freshman class as well as new assistant coach Mary McCracken.

This weekend the gymnastics team finished second at the Ivy Classic with an impressive score of 190.600.

It has been a difficult road lately for the men’s and women’s squash teams. The men’s team (3-9, 0-4 Ivy) will look for a positive spark for its hobbled roster when it faces Ivy League opponent Dartmouth and Amherst.

Squash Teams Have Tough Weekend at Home

Body:

Men’s and women’s squash stayed home in Ithaca this weekend, hosting Yale and Williams. Both Cornell teams were shut out by Yale, 9-0, and beaten by Williams, 8-1.

The men’s team (3-8, 0-4 Ivy) was overwhelmeed by Yale in the early match on Saturday. The matchup was highlighted by a spirited five-setter at the top of the order, with No. 1 freshman Chris Sachvie battling against Yale No. 1 Nick Chirls. In the unofficial Ivy League scrimmages, Sachvie had his way with Chirls, posting an impressive straight-sets win over the veteran by using a versatile all-around game and excellent disguise and deception on his strokes. Chirls, however, raised his game and adjusted in the regular season encounter to win the final two sets, 10-8 and 10-8.

Squashers Ready

Body:

Not many squads are ranked ahead of the men’s and women’s squash teams — just 17 to be exact. Four of these teams, however, will be in town this weekend to take on the Red.

After stating early in the season that their goal was to maintain their No. 9 ranking, the men have done enough to sit pat in that spot, beating Colby and Bowdoin this past weekend. This weekend, however, a fifth-ranked Yale squad and No. 8 Williams team will challenge the Red, looking to maintain their own rankings.

It’s NCAA time for the cross country teams this weekend, as members of the squads hope for strong performances at NCAA Regionals to catapult them to national title berths.
