Red Finishes Season at Binghamton

After dropping 3-of-4 games to Princeton over the weekend to secure second place in the Ivy League South Division, the softball team will finish up its season with a trip to Binghamton today. Despite having the second-best record in the Ivy League at 16-4, the Red will be kept out of the playoffs thanks to the relatively new divisional format.

Beginning last year, the Ivy League divided into the North and South, and the winners of each division now play for the Ivy League title. Playing in a more competitive South Division, Princeton finished ahead of Cornell at 18-2. Harvard, at 14-6, will have the chance to play Princeton for the title, despite having the third-best record in the Ivy League.

Softball Dominates With One-Sided Offense

After several days of perfect softball weather in Ithaca, thunder became a factor in the Red’s doubleheader with Ithaca College yesterday by delaying Game 2 in the middle of the fifth inning. Despite the interruption, Cornell improved to 37-7 with a 6-0 victory in Game 1, followed by an 8-0 win in a no-hitter from freshman Ali Tomlinson.

The Red extended its winning streak to 20 with back-to-back shutouts over the Ithaca Bombers (26-8, 12-0 Empire 8), who had their seven-game winning streak snapped by their cross-town Division I rivals. The Red is currently tied with Princeton — which the Red will face this weekend — at 15-1 atop the Ivy League.

Softball Takes on Cross-Town Rivals in Matchup

After extending its winning streak to 18 with sweeps of Syracuse and Columbia last week, the softball team will play another Empire State rival today when it travels to Ithaca College. The Red will need to keep its momentum rolling into the weekend’s four-game home-and-home series with Princeton, which is tied with Cornell atop the Ivy League.

After winning its 37th straight conference game, Division III’s No. 11 Ithaca (24-6, 12-0 Empire 8) has already wrapped up its conference regular season title and will host the Empire 8 playoffs. Cornell (35-7, 15-1), on the other hand, sits in a tie for first place and is still fighting for its conference crown.

Red Faces Last-Place Lions

The 2007 season ended with Cornell one game back of Penn in the Ivy League South, the Ancient Eight’s stronger division. A year later, the Red still finds itself painstakingly one game out of first at 11-1. The Red will get a chance to move past undefeated Princeton this weekend, but must take care of last-place Columbia in order to do that.

After finishing last in the Ivy League South Division last season, things looked to have improved as Columbia (12-24, 3-9 Ivy) started the 2008 conference season with three straight wins. Since then, however, the Lions have lost twelve of thirteen contests, including being swept by Harvard, Dartmouth and Princeton.

Softball Tops ’Cuse To Extend Streak

This year, the Red extended that winning streak to three as it took both games of yesterday’s doubleheader. In both games, the Red was behind heading into the bottom of the fifth but managed to pull ahead in both contests to win Game 1, 5-3, and Game 2, 5-4.

Syracuse (14-25, 5-7 Big East) struck first in Game 1, taking two unearned runs in the top of the second. After an error opened the door for the Orange offense to eventually score twice, freshman pitcher Ali Tomlinson struck out two batters to end the inning.
Upstate Rivals Face Off in Midweek Game

The softball team will have to wait until this weekend for a chance to move into first place in the Ivy League, but it will have a chance to play non-conference rival Syracuse today. Only in its ninth year, the Orange softball program will welcome the Red to Syracuse Softball Stadium in a battle for upstate color-tone supremacy.

While Cornell (29-7, 11-1 Ivy) currently ranks second in its division, Syracuse (14-23, 5-7) is sitting in the middle of the pack in the Big East. In out-of-conference play however, the Orange has won nine of its last 12 contests. This will be only the 14th meeting between the two schools, with Syracuse leading the series 8-6, including winning five of the last six.

Softball in Position to Take First in Conference Play

After getting through the round of games against the Ivy League North Division at 7-1, the Red will begin play against its South Division foes this weekend. In only the second year with the two-division format, the 2007 runner-up Red will face last year’s divisional champion, Penn, in two doubleheaders this weekend.

Last year Penn (18-2, 5-3 Ivy) surged during the second half of it’s Ivy Schedule, going 9-3 against the southern division, including three-of-four against Cornell. The Quakers will be trying to match that performance, after already matching last year’s 5-3 mark against the North Division.

Softball Continues Ivy Dominance

The Red extended its win streak to eight yesterday by taking two wins over visiting Dartmouth. After taking a close 3-1 victory in Game 1, the Red offense exploded in Game 2 en route to an 11-3 blowout. With the win, Cornell improved to 25-7 overall and 7-1 in the Ivy League.

The Red scored runs early and often yesterday, as has been the recent trend. Amidst an eight game winning streak, sophomore leadoff hitter Devon March has reached base and scored to open the game in four of the last six contests.

“There are voices in the back of my mind always telling me that it’s very important to get on [base],” March said.

Red Splits Ivy Opener, Looks Ahead to Brown

Five days after the scheduled contest between Cornell and Harvard, the weather finally cooperated enough yesterday to allow the Red to face off with the Crimson at Niemand-Robinson Softball Field. After twice postponing games with Dartmouth, canceling a doubleheader against Siena and postponing the two games with Harvard in the past week, the Red was finally able to squeeze in some competition. In the two games against the Crimson, Cornell split its Ivy opener, winning Game 1, 8-5, and falling, 4-1, in Game 2.

Star Sophomore Right on Track

Before every game, softball head coach Dick Blood must decide on a batting order and a defensive alignment for the Red. Last year, the arrival of then-freshman infielder Alyson Intihar, who ended up playing at all four infield positions last season, may have added some confusion to the decision process. But any confusion Intihar may have caused, she made up for by hitting third all season and playing her way to team co-MVP honors as a rookie.

Versatile in the infield and at the plate, Intihar led the team in home runs, slugging, RBIs, walks, total bases and even hit-by-pitches. According to Intihar, however, the way she ended the year was very different from how it started.

Senior Hurler Excited for Last Hurrah

Nearly four years ago senior Jenn Meunier arrived in Ithaca from Turpin High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she had been named to the All-State softball team. Three-plus seasons and 62 wins later, Meunier is set for her final year pitching in the red and white.

“I honestly don’t remember what I expected [before I came to Cornell],” Meunier said. “I just came planning on working hard and doing whatever job they gave me.”

Red Hosts Defending Ivy Champ in Ancient Eight Debut

In 2004, softball head coach Dick Blood led the Red to a 42-13 record (10-4 Ivy) en route to Cornell’s third conference crown, all coming in the six seasons from 1999 to 2004. Since then, the Red have finished second three consecutive seasons, but this weekend it will have another chance to get back to the top as it opens the conference schedule with doubleheaders against Harvard and Dartmouth.

The Red (16-6) will enter the weekend coming off of last week’s Spring Break trip to Florida, where it played 16 games in eight days. The Red won’t get a break, however, as its Ivy opener is against Harvard (7-12), the defending conference champions.

Softball Impresses in Florida Over Break

Like many of their fellow Cornellians, the women’s softball team headed south for Spring Break, but instead of relaxing under the Florida sun, the Red went through a grueling 16-game schedule over eight days. The women ended with an 11-5 record over the break to improve to 16-6 overall.

The Red opened the break in impressive fashion, winning the first two games of the Stetson Classic. Day 1 saw freshman pitcher Elizabeth Dalrymple open Spring Break with a six-hit, complete-game, shutout victory over Bowling Green.

Senior Jenn Meunier led the Red to a win against the Iowa Hawkeyes later that day with an eight-inning complete game shutout. Meunier allowed only two hits while striking out three in the 1-0 victory.

Softball Preps for Ivy Opener With Annual Spring Break Trip

After missing four games due to rain last weekend in Virginia, the softball team will spend spring break under the Florida sun while taking care of a packed 16-game, eight-day schedule. After getting out to a quick 5-1 start, the Red will look to bolster its record before heading into Ivy play next weekend by traveling for the Stetson Invitational and the Rebel Spring Games. Cornell will also play its annual double-header with Bethune Cookman in between Rebel games.

The Red’s first stop will be Deland, Fla., where it takes on Bowling Green, Iowa twice, and the host Stetson Hatters. In last year’s trip to Stetson, Cornell won its first two games before losing by one run in extra-innings to Stetson. The Red dropped its final two games of the tournament to finish 2-3.

W. Cagers Take Their First Ivy Crown

Before the season started, 16 sports writers from around the Ivy League selected Harvard as the overwhelming favorite to repeat as conference champions, while selecting Cornell to finish second. As it turns out, they were wrong, to a degree. With Harvard’s loss to Yale Saturday and Cornell’s 73-58 win over Penn and 76-59 win over Princeton, the Red captured a share of the Ivy League title for the first time in school history.

Three years ago, the women’s basketball team finished up the 2004-05 season with a tough 67-63 loss to Brown at Newman Arena. Current senior co-captains Gretchen Gregg and Megan Hughes were part of that team, which finished the season 3-24, going 1-13 in the Ivy League. Since then, the duo has welcomed junior co-captain Moina Snyder, a transfer whose athletic eligibility ends after this season, while also ushering in a new era of Cornell women’s basketball.

Last year, the softball team started the season with four wins at the George Mason Classic before going on to win the first 12 games of the year, giving the Red its best start in Cornell history. Over the weekend, the women opened the season with a win over Quinnipiac, but could not match last season’s start as they lost to the host George Mason Patriots in the second game on Saturday. The Red won its two games on Sunday to finish the weekend at 3-1.

W. Cagers Go For Big Season Sweep

The women’s basketball team hadn’t beaten either Dartmouth or Harvard in over three years until two weekends ago, when the Red welcomed the Crimson and the Green to Newman Arena. By beating both teams, Cornell snapped seven and 11-game losing streaks to Harvard and Dartmouth, respectively. This weekend, the women will have a chance to go even further by getting a season sweep of both teams to secure its hold of the Ivy League.

Heading into the first weekend series against Harvard (15-9, 8-2 Ivy) and Dartmouth (10-14, 7-3), Cornell (17-6, 9-1) and its two opponents sat in a three-way tie for first place with identical 5-1 conference records. Dartmouth and Harvard’s only losses were to each other, while Cornell had slipped on the road against Columbia.

Red Finishes Last at IFC Championships in New York City

The fencing team traveled to New York City yesterday to participate in the 111th Intercollegiate Fencing Championships — the longest-running college athletic championships in the nation — hosted by Columbia University. In a field of 12 schools, Cornell ended the day in fourth place among women’s teams, but placed 12th overall.

The field was made up of the seven Ivy League schools — all except Dartmouth. The Ancient Eight’s seven representatives were joined by Brandeis, Boston College, New York University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Vassar.Watch where you're pointing that: Despite a strong showing on Sunday, the Red finished 12th overall at this year’s IFA Championships.
W. basketball’s sweep gives Red one-game edge with four left

In a season that started with the women’s basketball team having its highest pre-season ranking in program history, the Red continued to establish its place in the school’s record books this weekend. With wins over Yale (7-16, 5-5 Ivy) and Brown (2-22, 1-9), the Red (17-6, 9-1) set school records for most overall wins and conference wins in a season.

First in Ivy, Lacking in Attendance

As of last weekend, the women’s basketball team sits atop the Ivy League standings in sole possession of first. For six years, head coach Dayna Smith has been running up and down the sidelines in Newman Arena. For the past four months, the women of Cornell basketball have been taking the court to represent the University. And assistant coach Dale Parker, after briefly leaving his post with the team, is back with the Red in the women’s locker room.

But where is Newman Nation?

W. Basketball Tips Off With Harvard, Dartmouth

“The three of us, being 5-1, this is what it’s all about.”

Women’s basketball head coach Dayna Smith evidently knows what she’s talking about, having led the Red (13-6) to a 5-1 record and a three-way tie for first place in the Ivy League. Beginning tonight, the Red will welcome Harvard (12-8, 5-1 Ivy) and Dartmouth (8-12, 5-1) to Newman Arena to see which color will end the weekend at the top of the Ancient Eight: Crimson, Green or Red.

W. Cagers Defeat Quakers, Tigers

After losing to Columbia in its first Ivy League road game, the women’s basketball team headed south to Princeton and Penn for two chances at winning a conference game on the road. The Red capitalized on both opportunities, beating the Tigers (4-17, 1-4 Ivy) and Quakers (3-17, 0-5 Ivy) to improve to 13-6 and 5-1 in the Ivy League.

Cornell opened the weekend with a close 77-73 victory over Princeton. It was a back-and-forth game all night, as Princeton held the lead for the majority of the first half, but was not able to contain the 3-point shooting of the Red.

W. Cagers Find One Another on Court

While the women’s basketball team can boast of having the Ivy League’s second-best scoring defense, it is their league-leading offense that has been most impressive this season. The first-place Red (11-6, 3-1 Ivy) are averaging a league-high 65.1 points per game, more than defending champion Harvard and the most for Cornell since the 2001-02 team scored 65.8 points a game to finish second behind the Crimson.

Red Set to Face Brown, Yale

Less than a year ago, the women’s basketball team stood at 10-13 (6-4 Ivy) before welcoming Brown and Yale to Newman Arena on consecutive days, knowing that there was no chance of catching Harvard in pursuit of the Ivy League title. This season is different, as the Red (9-6, 1-1) has only played two of its Ivy games and are still keeping pace with the Crimson (8-8, 1-1).

Cornell opened Ivy play with two games against Columbia, easily winning the first at home but dropping the second in New York City.

After Four Years, W. Cagers’ Gregg Finds Her Stroke

“Gretchen is a great pure shooter. That, along with her hustle, her defense and her rebounding provided us with a great spark off the bench.”

That’s what women’s basketball head coach Dayna Smith had to say about senior co-captain Gretchen Gregg after last season.

“She’s established her jump-shot, she can get to the hoop when she wants to and defensively, she’s had to play against the opposing team’s best player and she’s comfortable with that.”

That’s what Smith has to say Gregg now, whose clutch play as a starter has helped put the Red in contention for the Ivy League title.

W. Hoops Has Strong Break

While most Cornellians used the winter break to catch up on sleep, catch up with old friends and catch Drew Carry on “The Price is Right,” the women’s basketball team was busy finishing up its non-conference schedule in historic fashion.

Cornell’s 75-60 victory over NJIT to finish out-of-league play was head coach Dayna Smith’s 50th win with the Red and the 300th win in the program’s history. The win also brought the Red to 8-5, its best non-conference finish since the team went 8-4 through the 1999-00 non-conference schedule.

Snyder’s Shooting Efficiency Leads W. Basketball to Success

Michael Jordan, widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time, missed 613 shots in his collegiate career. Senior co-captain Moina Snyder has missed only 110 shots since transferring to Cornell last year from Umpqua Community College. Maybe it’s just a fluke. Maybe Jordan attempted more shots. Or maybe Snyder is better than Jordan. Only time will tell, as the Red is off to a 2-2 start under Snyder’s efficient shooting and dominant presence in the paint.

After ranking second in school history with a .513 shooting percentage last season, Snyder began the 2007-08 campaign by draining her first eight shots from the floor and first six free throws, not missing a single shot attempt in the team’s first two contests.

The women’s basketball team began its season ranked No. 2 in the Ivy League, while the Mountaineers of West Virginia (3-0) began the season ranked No. 18 in the nation. After welcoming the Red (1-2) to the WVU Coliseum yesterday, West Virginia head coach Mike Carey improved to 35-1 in non-conference home games by defeating Cornell, 93-52.

“West Virginia is a very good, balanced team,” said head coach Dayna Smith. “They’re very explosive and went on long and very productive runs. We couldn’t really climb back in. They played like they’re 18th in the country.”

W. B-ball Gets First Win, Perpares for Quick Turnaround

After both teams opened last night’s game with two and a half scoreless minutes, a 3-point

field goal from senior tri-captain Gretchen Gregg put Cornell up 3-0 in its home-opener against Lafayette (1-1). The Red (1-1) held the lead for the remainder of the game, earning its first win of the year and fourth home-opening victory in six seasons for head coach Dayna Smith.

Coming off of Saturday’s loss to Long Island, the Red got out to an early 11-4 lead on the strength of 3s from Gregg, sophomore Lauren Benson and junior Kayleen Fitzsimmons, along with a 2-point hoop from Fitzsimmons.

On Wednesday the Ivy League released the 2007-08 women’s basketball preseason media poll. Not surprisingly, defending champion Harvard sits atop the rankings with all but one of the 16 first place votes. Princeton received the only other first place vote and ranks second, tied with Cornell. The second place selection is the highest preseason ranking the Red has ever received, after finishing third in the Ivy League last season with a school-record eight conference wins.

Returning Starters Lead W. Basketball

After opening the 2006-07 campaign with seven straight losses, the women’s basketball team (12-15, 8-6 Ivy) won 12 of its final 20 games to finish third in the Ivy League while tying the school record for conference victories. With four returning starters, head coach Dayna Smith will look to keep the momentum rolling for the Red.

“Defensively we’re getting stronger and gaining a better understanding of the team concept,” Smith said. “We still have a ways to go this year, but offensively we are clicking.”

Not included among the four returning starters is junior forward Jeomi Maduka, 2005 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and two-time second-team All-Ivy selection.

Sprint Football Edges Princeton in Season Finale

Senior defensive end Steve Attanasio lined up for what would be the last second down of his career. The Red held a 14-7 lead, but Army was driving and had just crossed into Red territory. There was less than 20 seconds on the clock, and as each second ticked away, Attanasio’s career was coming one second closer to its finish. The only thing that would extend the defensive end’s three-year career would be overtime. Attanasio, along with twelve other seniors, wanted to end their careers in regulation.

Sprints' 13 Seniors Reflect on Titles, Injuries, Careers

For 13 members of the sprint football team, Friday’s game against Army will be the last time they step on the turf at Schoellkopf Field in CSFL competition. With 10 members of the undefeated 2006 CSFL Champion team and three senior rookies, the class of 2008 is the smallest group of seniors Terry Cullen has seen in 43 years with Cornell sprint.

“It’s the smallest senior class we’ve had,” Cullen said. “And it’s been getting smaller as we’ve been losing them throughout the season to injuries.”

Sprints Must Overcome Injuries Against Penn

After opening the season with a win over Penn at Schoellkopf Field, the sprint football team has dominated Princeton twice, 49-29 and 34-0, and fallen to Navy 35-14. In all three games the halftime leader went on to win the contest.

Heading into Saturday’s rematch against Penn, however, the Red (3-1, 1-1 CSFL) will remember having to overcome a 6-3 deficit at the half to beat Penn by only five points, winning 23-18 at home.

Malleo Switches From Varsity Football to Sprint

When junior Matt Malleo made the decision to switch from varsity football to sprint, he knew he would have to start watching the balance on the scale and keep it under 172 pounds. The transition has been easy for Malleo, who has consistently found balance throughout all aspects of life, whether it is on the field, in the classroom or working as a manager-in-training at Enterprise Rent-A-Car this past summer.

In his first two years at Cornell, Malleo was a defensive back with the varsity squad, seeing limited action in seven games in his sophomore campaign. He has found that the switch to sprint has helped him off the field while giving him more responsibility on it.

Navy Avenges Loss to Sprinters

UNION, N.J. (Oct. 7) — The Red collided with the Midshipmen of the Naval Academy this weekend in Pride Bowl XXIX held at Kean Alumni Stadium, in what was labeled “The Ultimate Rematch” by Project Pride, Inc.

In last year’s matchup held at Schoellkopf Field, the Red snapped Navy’s 15-game winning streak and took the CSFL title from the defending champs. This year it was the Midshipmen’s turn, snapping Cornell’s eight-game winning streak and placing themselves atop the standings at 3-0 (1-0 CSFL) with a 35-14 victory.

Cornell Hosts Invitational

“A swing and a drive.” While most associate this classic sports phrase with baseball players sending balls over the fence, some picture a polo-clad Cornell student driving a slightly smaller ball 200 yards onto the well-groomed fairway of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course. With the nation’s attention turned to the close of baseball’s regular season this weekend, the golf team will focus on playing host at the Cornell Invitational

Princeton Records Only Out-of-Conference Win

Conference play is already underway in the Ivy League, as Cornell traveled to New Haven to challenge the defending champion Bulldogs and Brown faced off against Harvard in the first ever night game in the 104 year history of Harvard Stadium, the oldest stadium in college football.

While Dartmouth finds itself as the only winless team aside from Penn, it is also the only Ivy team besides Yale with more touchdowns than Yale junior Mike McCleod, who was held to only three scores this weekend after scoring four touchdowns at Georgetown in the opener.

New Hampshire 52, Dartmouth 31

Farrell’s Field Vision, Intensity Make Her Ideal Leader

Despite three years littered with records and success on the lacrosse field, senior Courtney Farrell probably isn’t even the first Farrell that comes to most students mind.

Still, with three All-Ivy selections — including two first-team honors and a Northeast All-Region first-team selection, Farrell is at least trying to make her case against Will. She has led the Red in overall points the last two seasons and her 33 goals placed her in the top-100 nationally.

Harvard, Brown Stay Unbeaten in M. Soccer

With conference play just under a month away, Ancient Eight soccer was in full force this weekend with all sixteen Ivy League men’s and women’s soccer teams in action. With most teams having played only three or four matches, the Brown and Harvard men remain the only two teams yet to taste defeat.

Men’s Soccer

Harvard 1, Maine 0

Harvard 2, Providence 1

Harvard came into the weekend ranked No. 13 in the nation and remained undefeated by beating Maine and Providence, 1-0, and 2-1, respectively. Harvard moved to 3-0 with strong play between the pipes from senior co-captain Adam Hahn and a pair of goals off the foot of junior Michael Fucito against Providence.

Brown 2, Santa Clara 1

Brown 3, Fordham 1
