C.U. Plan Prepares for Population Increase

“Poor air quality, massive parking lots, traffic jams and delays are integral parts of life in many parts of the United Sates, but they don’t have to be a part of our future here,” said Bill Wendt, Cornell’s director of Transportation and Mail Services. Wendt’s optimism about Ithaca’s future can be attributed to the Transportation-Focused Generic Environmental Impact Statement released today, which examines the future of Ithaca’s transportation in light of presumed population growth in the next 10 years.

Freshman Reading Book Draws Mixed Reactions

The cold aura of Barton Hall was, on August 24, transformed into an intensely intellectual colloquium when the New Students Book Project invaded the massive gymnasium. The incoming class, along with others members of the Cornell community, discussed Lincoln at Gettysburg by Gary Wills. The book’s focus is on the 272 words of the Gettysburg Address.

Lincoln at Gettysburg was sent to over 3,700 members of the Class of 2012 at the beginning of the summer. They were assigned to read about it for their first academic experience of the year, and then analyze it with their peers.

A New Cornell:

Cornell is a place of change: from the students who pass through campus to the scientific innovations that University researchers pioneer. Thus, it’s only fitting that the campus changes as well. Here are some of the latest transformations that the University is currently undergoing.

The Johnson Museum broke ground on its 16,000 square foot addition in May, prompting a groundbreaking celebration in which President David Skorton read a haiku. The 35-year-old museum will receive $20 million, which will go towards the addition of a lecture room, new galleries, a workshop studio and more storage space. Though the University still lacked $1 million of the money needed for the addition as of May, the new Johnson is scheduled to open in 2010.

Unique Dynamic Gives Obama Upper Hand in Tompkins

Ithaca’s “10 square miles surrounded by reality” seemed to encompass the whole of Tompkins County on Super Tuesday when Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) soundly defeated Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) in the county’s Democratic primary. But the question remains: how?

Despite losses in every other county throughout the state, Obama finished with a nearly 17-point lead over home-stater Clinton in Tompkins. Across the rest of New York, Clinton received 57 percent of the Democratic vote, while Obama was awarded only 40 percent.

The Arts Staff's Guide to Having Fun (and Failing School)

Cornell is hard — extremely, exhaustingly hard. It’s important you know that now. It’s also important you know that there are plenty of things to do at Cornell and in Ithaca besides your (nearly impossible) school work. It may come as a surprise, but some of those things don’t even involve drinking.

The following is a somewhat incomplete list of all the great venues and organizations on and off campus that provide art and entertainment to you. We say incomplete, because, even though we’d like to think so, we aren’t actually omniscient. There are probably venues or cool establishments around that we don’t know of. If you find one, give us a call, so we can pretend we knew about it all along (or better yet, join our staff and write about it yourself).

Prime Time Players: Athletes to Watch in 2008-09

Seniors

Zac Hine — M. Track and Field

Hine, the leader of Cornell’s long-distance squad that dominated the Heps last year, became a key contributor for the Red in the 3,000-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter races.

Jeomi Maduka — W. Track & W. Basketball

An athlete of extraordinary ability, Maduka could leap tall defenders on the court and jump past the opposition in track meets — sometimes even in the same weekend. She was the Ivy League Player of the Year on the Ivy League champion women’s basketball team and recently placed 12th at the U.S. Olympic Trials with a mark of 19-6 1/4.

Bobby Cronheim — Golf

Cornell Crystal Ball: Previewing 2008-09

Men’s Basketball

The reigning Ivy League champs will attempt to defend their title during the 2008-09 season. The Red’s chances look good, as the team will return every player from their championship season except forward Jason Hartford ’08.

The Red will look to ride a potent offense orchestrated by junior point guard Louis Dale, the Ivy League Player of the Year and an AP selection for honorable mention All-American, and anchored by senior Jeff Foote in the post and junior Ryan Wittman on the perimeter.

Football

In his four years at Cornell, head coach Jim Knowles ’87 has made Schoellkopf Field a stronghold impregnable to opponents — the Red has gone 16-5 at home under Knowles.

The Year in Review: A Look Back at ’07-’08

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team had arguably its most successful season ever, running the table in the Ivy League to clinch its first NCCA tournament bid in 20 years. The team earned several votes in the AP top-25 poll during a 16-game winning streak. Individually, sophomore Louis Dale was named the Ivy League Player of the Year and an honorable mention to the AP All-American team.

Women’s Basketball

Kent Kleinman to Lead AAP as Dean

The year-long search to find a replacement for Mohsen Mostafavi as dean of the College of Architecture, Art and Planning came to a close this morning with the University’s announcement that Kent Kleinman will take the reins from interim Dean W. Stanley Taft. Taft has been serving as interim dean since Mostafavi resigned last fall.

Kleinman currently serves as the chair of the Department of Architecture, Interior Design and Lighting at Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. His five-year term will commence on Sept. 1.

Provost Biddy Martin offered praise for Kleinman, noting a distinct point of view that he brings with him.

Cornell Student Drowns in Fall Creek Gorge

Local emergency officials declared a Cornell student dead when his body was recovered from Fall Creek Gorge below the suspension bridge leading to North Campus last night around 9:20 p.m. He was later identified as 18-year-old Douglas Lowe from Shelton, Conn, a student in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Lowe was said to have been swimming in the gorge with about 12 other people when his body was pulled under the current, the Ithaca Journal reported. He slid down a smooth rock surface that leads to a swirling pool of collected water — often a popular swimming spot for Cornellians.

One of Four Emergency Sirens Fails in Test of New Technology

The University tested the four emergency sirens, which were installed over Spring Break, at about 11 a.m. yesterday. Three of the sirens — located on the roofs of Mary Donlon Hall, the Hans Bethe House and Bartels Hall — functioned properly, while the one located above the Veterinary Medical Center did not, according to Simeon Moss ’73, director of Cornell Press Relations.

The contractors are currently investigating the problem with the Vet College siren.

“It is an ongoing process and we are continuing testing to make sure they perform the way we want them to,” Moss said.

The sirens sound a three-minute alert tone and can also broadcast a pre-recorded or live message.

Graduate Students Face Off for Student Trustee Seat

As the political tension across the country heightens before the 2008 presidential election, a similar sentiment is spreading across Cornell as four graduate students vie for one of the most influential positions on campus: a seat on the Board of Trustees.

Of the 64 members of the Board, two are students — one graduate and one undergraduate. Serving as full voting members of the Board, the students are able to meet, debate and discuss Cornell issues with all of the University’s trustees at their periodic meetings. Kate Duch ’09 and Mao Ye grad are currently the two student members of the Board.

The New York State Division of Human Rights found probable cause to hear a complaint filed by Alderperson Robin Holtham Korherr (D-5th Ward) accusing Tompkins County Sheriff Peter Meskill of sexual harassing her while she was working as his confidential secretary, The Ithaca Journal reported.

Additionally, Korherr is filing a retaliation complaint, claiming that she was retaliated against after taking legal action.

According to The Journal, the claims are being investigated by the State, rather than the County’s human rights commission, to avoid conflicts of interest.

Spring Break Retrospective

Vegas, Baby

by Rebecca Shoval, Sun Senior Writer

It took us until we got about five minutes outside of Los Angeles to bring up the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas reference. Of course, Las Vegas looks nothing like it did when Hunter S. Thompson visited there in 1971. Following an almost five-hour drive past the occasional cluster of homes, a solar powered-energy plant and one large rest stop occupied almost entirely with fast food chains, arriving in Las Vegas gave mirage a new meaning.

Update: 10:45 p.m.

The Cornell men's basketball team was selected as the No. 14 seed in the NCAA tournament and will face No. 3-seeded Stanford in Anaheim on Thursday, the NCAA revealed this evening. It is the Cornell's first bid to the tournament in 20 years and the Red’s third-ever appearance.

Cornell locked up its NCAA bid after winning the outright Ivy League title, the school’s first since 1988. That year, the team received the No. 16 seed and lost to No. 1-seeded Arizona in the first round, 90-50. Cornell’s first appearance was in 1954 after it won the EIBL title.

No. 11/11 Stanford (26-7, 13-5 Pac-10) is making its 16th overall appearance. The Cardinals finished second in the Pac-10 Tournament, with UCLA taking the championship game, 67-64.

‘Ithaca Is Gorges’ Slogan Lives On After Creator’s Passing

Howard S. Cogan ’50 died peacefully at his home on Saturday after battling Alzheimer’s disease. He was 78. As a long-time Ithaca resident, Cogan was known for his work as founder of Cogan Associates, a communications firm that served local and regional businesses. However, he is most famous for creating the iconic “Ithaca Is Gorges” slogan in the ’70s, a phrase which has since become famous throughout the world. Cogan never copyrighted the phrase, and according to The Ithaca Journal, permitted local businesses to use the slogan as advertising with the hope of bringing tourists to Ithaca so they could love it as much as he did.

Two Former Cornell Professors Pass Away

Ray J. Wu

Prof. Ray J. Wu, molecular biology and genetics, passed away on Feb. 10 in Ithaca due to cardiac arrest. He was 79. In 1970, Wu established the first method for sequencing DNA and laid the groundwork for DNA cloning that has gone on to help scientists unravel the DNA sequence determination of rice and human genomes.

Born in China and raised in the U.S., Wu served as a scientific advisor to the governments of both China and Taiwan, while also counseling U.S.-relations in the areas of biological science and evolution.

Fencers Topple Four, Win Invite

This past weekend, the fencing team rolled through the Wellesley Invitational like the Patriots rolled through the NFL regular season — well, almost. While the Red swept Tufts, UMass, Wellesley and Hunter College over the weekend, it did allow a point here and there — although never more than six in a single match.

“We lost a lot of bouts that we should have won to easy teams,” said sophomore Alison Ewing, who fences sabre.

Nonetheless, after a long layoff of over seven weeks, the fencing team was on its game for most of the afternoon in its final tune up before the Ivy League championships. Junior sabre Alex Heiss — who spent last semester training with the Chinese National team — won all 12 of her matches to lead a sabre team that took 32-of-36 points.

Warren Road Car Crash Victim Released From Pa. Hospital

58 year-old Robert Gee of Brooktondale, N.Y. was released from the hospital on Saturday morning following a severe one-car accident at the intersection of Warren Road and Forest Home Drive in Ithaca on Friday evening.

According to Simeon Moss ’73, director of Cornell Press Relations, the Cornell Police Department responded to a 911 call at 10:48 p.m. and emergency personnel extracted a “somewhat disoriented and belligerent” Gee from his disabled vehicle 40 feet from the edge of Fall Creek. When the personnel arrived, he appeared intoxicated and there was a strong odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle.

The Rest of the Best: 2007

Best Trends

Seriously over-worn, and only dubiously practical, the ankle boot is nevertheless irresistibly adorable. Seen rarely on Cornell campus but plastered in every magazine that even mentions the word ‘fashion’. They look surprisingly great with everything from skinny jeans to sweater dresses.

Scarves are awesome, especially in the artic temperatures of upstate New York. Pashminas are a personal favorite (the wide cotton-fringed ones that almost everyone owns in multiple colors). The look great worn in any number of ways — and they keep you warm! Who could ask for anything more?

Best Books of 2007

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The long-awaited and much-anticipated conclusion to the series we’ve grown up with cannot be ignored. Though the prose of many authors trumps that of J.K. Rowling, few have not enjoyed the magical world she created (and let’s be fair — she wrote better with every book). The seventh and final installment of Harry Potter was (for most) a deliciously satisfying end to an era.

A Thousand Splendid Suns

is an incredibly moving novel from the acclaimed author of The Kite Runner. Khaled Hosseini has done it again — A Thousand Splendid Suns captures beautifully the heartbreak and happiness that is modern Afghani existence, but more importantly, life in general.

Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier

Best Songs of 2007

“Coffee Shop,” Yung Joc

Though this “yung” rapper is known primarily for his two-step hit “Meet Me in the Club (It's Going Down),” he’s also recorded one of the catchiest rap jams about brewing and serving gourmet “coffee” in recent history. Check those kiddy sing-song-along “la la la la la”s!

“5 Years Time,” Noah and the Whale

With lyrics like, “Yeah, well I feel pretty happy too/ and I'm always pretty happy just kicking back with you,” it's hard not to fall hard for this pop band from jolly old England. A sunshiney song, brimming with a carpe diem message and an extra dose of hand claps, Noah and the Whale will steal your heart and you won't mind. Check out their Wes Anderson-esque music video for an extra dose of “Aww.”

Best Movies of 2007

There Will Be Blood

Daniel Day-Lewis gives a performance for the ages as a California oilman who makes his fortune at the expense of his humanity. From the film’s quiet and fascinating opening passages through its explosive finale, Blood is so masterfully constructed that it has drawn comparisons to Citizen Kane, and deserves every single bit of the praise.

Atonement

A beautifully rendered epic romance that explores the tragic implications of a young girl’s false accusation at an English country house in 1935. James McAvoy and Keira Knightly are two of the best young actors the U.K. has to offer.

The Bourne Ultimatum

Best Albums of 2007

M.I.A. -Kala

Thank the Lord for the paranoid U.S. border control, the one that forced this killer tiny lady to stay outside of the egg-crate walls of Timbaland’s hit making factory. A global sonic experience, this album brings a new world of fresh hitz.

Arcade Fire -Neon Bible

Praise be the Butler-Chassagne family, with their impeccable funeral fashion sense and their ability to craft beautiful track after awe-inspiring track. Leaving some of the dirth-like gloom of 2004’s Funeral behind, Neon Bible is a revelation of big-band sound matched with a lyrical landscape that conjures images of a modern-day agnostic Pentecostal traveling church group.

Battles - Mirrored

We’re sure you have all been waiting in intense anticipation for the return of The Sun, and, of course, for Arts and DAZE. But don’t worry, fellow classmates, your hopes and wishes have paid off — we are back and ready to start the year rolling.

One of the things we really want to work on this semester is our communication. Tons of stuff is going on in the Cornell community, and not just a-capella or theatre.

Men's Hockey Takes Pair From Niagara

The men's hockey team finished its non-conference schedule with a pair of wins, topping Niagara, 6-0 on Friday night and 4-3 on Saturday. Junior Michael Kennedy led the way with six points on the weekend.

Friday's game was Cornell's biggest margin of victory in nearly a year. Kennedy and classmate Evan Barlow both notched two goals and an assist to lead the Red, while freshman Riley Nash and senior Chris Fontas each added a goal apiece. Fontas's tally was his first career goal in a Cornell uniform, though he scored three times while playing for UMass-Lowell.

Sophomore Ben Scrivens got the shutout in goal, turning away 17 Niagara shots. Cornell held the edge in shots, 33-17.
