Roger McGuinn, the famed and respected guitarist for seminal 60’s jangle-pop outfit the Byrds, has been surprisingly silent since that band’s breakup in the mid-70’s. Treasures is an extension of an Internet project of McGuinn’s, in which he recorded old folk standards and posted one per month for download on his website. On these 18 tracks, McGuinn’s jangly 12-string is as distinctive and lovely as ever, and his treatment of these songs is pretty faithful. The Irish folk ballad “Whiskey in the Jar” and the melancholy “Wagoner’s Lad” are among the many highlights.
