Polo Teams Face Stanford, Yale

The polo squads will return to action this weekend as the men and women both host Stanford, tomorrow and tonight, respectively. The lady riders will conclude the weekend with a trip to Ivy League doormat Yale on Sunday afternoon.

The men, who are in the midst of a rebuilding campaign after losing All-American Jeff Embow ’01 to graduation, will meet a Cardinal team that while poised to make a run at a regional title is at best second-rate compared to most East coast teams.

The lady Cardinal should prove to be even less of a challenge for a Cornell women’s team that looks to have all the pieces assembled for yet another run at a national championship.

“We should walk over them pretty easily,” head coach David Eldredge ’81 said.

Eldredge is pleased with the stamina his team has showed since returning from break.

“Both teams came out of the break in good fashion. They don’t have as much rust as they could have.”

The Bulldogs have shown signs of improvement in recent years but the contest should be a laugher for the Red.

Despite the lack of parity, Eldredge billed the meeting as an opportunity to gain “good experience riding other people’s horses.”

Added the coach: “This weekend is more or less an icebreaker to get everyone back up to speed.”
