In the final preparation before the upcoming Eastern Regional Championships, both the men’s and women’s polo teams took on the Toronto Polo Club this weekend. The women emerged from Friday night’s match with a decisive 18-9 win, while the men played to a 19-19 tie Saturday night.

Senior Melissa Riggs paced the women with six goals against the visitors, who have given the riders loads of trouble in the past. The pace of the match was smooth and breeds a great deal of confidence for the Red, which won Easterns last year.

“The girls are ready,” commented head coach David Eldredge ’81, “they’re at the top of their game right now.”

Despite some problems with positioning in the fourth chukker, the men were able to overcome many of the difficulties that have plagued them over the past several games. Sophomore Senter Johnson led the Red scorers with six.

“I was very happy [with the team’s play,]” Eldredge said, “we should definitely compete at Regionals.”

Cornell will again host the Eastern Regional Championships, which begin Thursday and run through the weekend at Oxley Equestrian Center.
