Equinophobic Shooters

I was going to write my column on how the men’s lacrosse team should give Syracuse a hard time this afternoon at Schoellkopf. But then I realized that if I did that, I might inadvertently jinx the team thereby causing a loss. I know, it is unlucky to be superstitious, but I am so I will quickly switch the topic before I do any undue harm to the laxers.

Slope Day Will Face Only Minor Alterations

The drastic changes to Slope Day that have been anticipated by some Cornell students do not appear to be taking effect this year, according to an April 8 letter sent by President Hunter R. Rawlings III to Kent Hubbell ’69, dean of students. The letter largely approved of the recommendations of the Slope Day Steering Committee which Hubbell is chair. “The letter basically supports everything we recommended,” Hubbell said. These recommendations include, among other things, the limitation of what kinds of alcoholic beverages students can bring to the Slope as well as in what kinds of containers. “I am especially pleased with the recommendation to prohibit hard alcohol [liquor or mixed drinks] from the event, allow only beverages [non-alcoholic or alcoholic] in unopened cans to enter the Slope and permit legal age students to bring, at most, one six pack of unopened cans (not bottles) of beer or hard lemonade,” Rawlings wrote in his letter. The Steering Committee’s original recommendations of a fenced in Slope-area and staff-manned checkpoints have also since been modified. The Slope now will only be partially fenced in using fencing fragments, the natural topography and buildings surrounding it. “In my view it is essential that the Committee conduct a thorough analysis of the success of these initiatives as soon as is practical after this year’s event,” Rawlings wrote. “I’m not sure if it will work,” Hubbell said. “There is concern about how you create a perimeter for the event absent of a fence.” In his letter, Rawlings also supported the rekindling of the Great Feast, a Slope Day tradition that began in 1979. For most of the early 1980s, Cornell Dining hosted a free, term-end barbecue providing non-alcoholic beverages such as soft drinks and water. Rawlings also agreed to provide DJ entertainment on the Slope and that he would “work with vice president [Susan H.] Murphy to see what [funding] we can provide.” Rawlings did ask that the Committee, “schedule the start of each of those events in light of the information provided to you by the Faculty Senate.” “The timing and volume of the music should take into account the conduct of classes in progress on the Arts Quad,” he said. Finally, Rawlings supported the Committee’s suggestion to plan alternatives to Friday morning pre-parties but stated that “any such events must be scheduled so as not to interfere with Friday morning instruction.” Currently, Hubbell is working with students and faculty to arrange for a freshmen breakfast on North Campus. “We plan on adding events for each class in the years to come,” Hubbell said. Cornell students expressed mixed reviews on the new Slope Day provisions. “I think they should cater as well as allow us to bring our own beverages, like at Homecoming,” said Burt Weiss ’04. “Having beer sold is convenient so you don’t have to walk around with backpacks.” “The changes are ultimately a good compromise. I don’t think there will be any problems doing what you’ve got to do,” said Adam Caslow ’05. Cornell Resumes Hiring New Staff

The University-wide hiring freeze for all non-academic and non-student employees is ending next week for externally funded positions and June 30 for all other University positions. The Workforce Planning Team, a long term project to examine Cornell’s 7,000 person non-academic workforce will continue to evaluate different ways to meet budgetary constraints. Henrik N. Dullea ’61, vice president for University relations, identified several ways of meeting those constraints: reducing expenditures through cuts in equipment or personnel and raising revenue through external sources such as the government or tuition. “Between those options, we must fill the gap,” Dullea said. Over the next three years there will be a $30 million estimated fiscal shortfall. On April 15, an estimated ten percent of non-academic jobs, funded by external sources, will resume hiring. According to Dullea, many positions financed by external sources had already been filled due to an exemption process of the hiring freeze. On July 1, however, a more dramatic change will take place when departments, schools and programs begin re-filling vacant positions. The freeze was initiated last Fall due to constraints stemming from a 7.8 percent drop in the University’s endowment for fiscal year 2001 and the fear of a nationwide recession following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. From Nov. 2001 to March 2002 there were 245 new job hires according to Harold D. Craft, Jr., vice president for administration and chief financial officer. Those job hires represent a 63 percent decrease in hiring from the same period last year and a significant savings for the University, according to Craft. The freeze aimed to reduce short-term budget pressures while initiating a larger program to review staffing, according to the Cornell News Service. “The freeze was intended to be a first step in a longer-term planning processes examining nonacademic staffing requirements,” said Provost Biddy (Carolyn A.) Martin, as reported by the Cornell News Service. Those longer-term changes in hiring will continue under the watch of the Workforce Planning Team. “The units will be more governed by budgetary constraints,” Dullea said. “They will be careful in filling positions as they become vacant.” The Workforce Planning Team seeks to realize financial savings and increased efficiency through more clearly define roles, responsibilities, performance standards, according to Carolyn Ainslie, vice president for budget and planning.Archived article by Peter Norlander
