Online Anti-War Petition Draws Faculty Support

A recent petition opposing a potential U.S. war with Iraq has found support amongst some of Cornell’s faculty and staff.

The petition, created by professors at the University of Minnesota and posted on the web by an MIT neuroscientist, has garnered to date 13,763 faculty signatures, of which 43 are Cornell University faculty and staff.

Support

Prof. Katherine Fennelly, public affairs, University of Minnesota, one of the creators of the petition, did not express surprise at the amount of support for the petition.

“People have very strong reservations about the go-it-alone approach the federal government seems to be favoring,” said Fennelly.

The arguments outlined in the petition include one that claims that an invasion of Iraq might destabilize the Middle East region and lead to “increased popular appeal of radical Islamic movements
