The gymnastics team finished fourth at the Ivy Classic, posting an overall score of 187.675. A 192.300 proved good enough for Yale to win the Ivy title while host Penn followed closely, registering a 192. Brown took third place with a 189.425.

“We could have had a better day,” commented head coach Paul Beckwith. “The falls on the beam just killed us.”

Apart from the beam mishaps, the Red had a good showing on the other three events.

“We won bars as a team which is a great accomplishment,” said Beckwith.

Freshman gymnast Cathy Schnell was the main force behind the Red’s bar superiority. Her 9.9 on this event set a new school record and won Schnell first place in the Ivies — a feat that has only been accomplished by one other Cornell gymnast in the past decade.

Shellen Goltz also excelled on the bar exercise. Her 9.8 secured a top-five finish on this event.

Denise Hurd led the Red on the vault with a 9.550. This score placed her third overall on this event.

Larissa Calka’s 9.775 on floor paved the way for an impressive combined score of 48.175.

The Red’s next competition will be Saturday, March 8 in Teagle Gymnasium against Temple.
