Local Bank Robbed

Local bank Tompkins County Trust Company was robbed yesterday afternoon at approximately 2:16 PM.

According to Lt. David Nazer, Ithaca City Police, the robber did not display a weapon, but handed a note to a cashier demanding an undetermined amount of money. The suspect is a white male, approximately 5′ 8” and who was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses during the robbery. The Ithaca City Police is “actively pursuing leads” at the current time.

Schutt '04 Signs Deal With Twins

Following a season during which he led the Ivy League in strikeouts and became the first Cornellian to be named the league Pitcher of the Year, Chris Schutt ’04 added another accolade to his resume in June, when he was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the seventh round of the First Year Entry draft. Schutt, the 208th overall pick, signed with the Twins and was assigned to the Class A Elizabethton (Tenn.) Twins. Schutt noted that the rapid journey from college to the minor leagues has not given him much time to enjoy being drafted, but explained, “As it sinks in, the feeling gets a lot better.” Schutt, in one game this year with Elizabethton, pitched five innings, allowing one hit, three walks, and eight strikeouts in a winning effort. “The minors is a lot more laid back [than college], and the players are a lot better” Schutt said. “Your hitters can bail you out, and the defense behind you is very solid.” Despite a 1.89 ERA, Schutt compiled an unspectacular 3-5 record in his final season at Cornell. In eight starts, Schutt gave up 24 runs, but only 13 were earned. Schutt had three complete games, a .192 batting average against, and 10 or more strikeouts in six of his eight starts, including 15 against Columbia. That performance earned him Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors one of the two times that happened this past season. In 62 innings of work, Schutt allowed 43 hits, 23 walks, and had an Ivy League-leading 89 strikeouts. When he was not pitching, Schutt was the team’s starting centerfielder, where he showcased his stellar arm, recording three outfield assists on the season. At the plate, Chris was 22-92 for a .239 average, with 5 doubles, 11 runs scored, 1 home run, and 14 runs batted in. He had a .339 on base percentage which was boosted by his 14 walks. His best offensive performance came in 10-5 win over Delaware State in which he went 3-4 with 2 RBIs, and a walk.Archived article by Chris Mascaro
LeNeveu Leaves Cornell for NHL

After making a trip to the Frozen Four for the first time in 23 years this past season, the men’s hockey team looked to duplicate the feat this coming winter. That task was made all the more difficult yesterday, as the Red’s netminder from a season ago, David LeNeveu ’05 agreed to a multi-year contract with the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, thereby forfeiting his remaining two seasons of college eligibility. LeNeveu, the country’s top goalie during the 2002-2003 campaign, was a second round selection and 46th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Sitting between the pipes for the Red this season, LeNeveu broke numerous Cornell and NCAA records. In his sophomore year, LeNeveu set the ECAC and Red record for shutouts in a season with nine, breaking the mark previously set by the legendary Ken Dryden ’69. Backstopping the nation’s top defense, he also set the NCAA record for the lowest single-season goals-against-average at 1.20. For his efforts in net, LeNeveu earned a laundry list of accolades. After the regular season, LeNeveu was named the ECAC co-Player of the Year and also won the Ken Dryden Award as the conference’s top goalie. The awards kept piling up for LeNeveu during the postseason, as he was honored as the ECAC Tournament MVP, a first-team All-American, and a Hobey Hat Trick finalist. During the Winter Recess last season, LeNeveu was also the only player selected to the Canadian Junior National Team, which won the silver medal at the World Championships held in December. LeNeveu, who would have been a junior in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in the fall semester, leaves Cornell after having played 46 games and posting a GAA of 1.29 and a record of 39-5-2 during that stretch. With LeNeveu’s departure, the Red will turn to the duo of senior Todd Marr and sophomore Louis Chabot. Marr, who saw action in four games last season while LeNeveu was competing in the World Junior Championships, posted a 2-2 mark in his four starts in net while allowing just 1.76 goals per game.
