Burden Leaves M. Cagers For Florida International Job

Changes are in store for the men’s basketball team this season, as assistant coach Mike Burden has left the team to accept a similar position at Florida International. Burden was head coach Steve Donahue’s top assistant for the past three years and was responsible for recruiting and instructing low-post players.

“I think Mike saw an opportunity to work for a guy he’s known for a long time,” said Donahue, describing Burden’s decision to join Golden Panthers’ head coach Donnie Marsh. “It’s a situation where he thinks he can grow professionally in another league.”

With Burden’s departure, assistants Joe Burke and Izzi Metz were each moved up a spot on Donahue’s staff. Burke, who becomes the top assistant as he enters his fourth season with the Red, will take on the role of recruiting coordinator. He had been Cornell’s primary field recruiter for the past three years, and in that time has helped bring in some of the top new talents in the Ivy League, including 2003 Ivy Rookie of the Year Lenny Collins.

Metz, who will be in his third season with Cornell, will add increased recruiting responsibilities to his job description. Metz has worked with both frontcourt and backcourt players in his two years with the team thus far. He has also served as head coach of the junior varsity squad. Under his tutelage, three players advanced to the varsity team — Brandon Barton ’03, senior Kevin Farley, and junior King Ogbogu.

“It was good in the sense that I was able to advance a guy like Coach Metz,” said Donahue. “In this profession, you hope that somebody moves into a good job and you get promoted.”

Donahue recently hired Paul Fortier to fill out his coaching staff for the 2003-04 season. Fortier has a slightly different background than the rest of the staff, coming in with extensive professional playing experience. He has spent the last 14 years playing in various European professional leagues after a college career at Washington.

Fortier, a 6-9 former power forward, will work primarily with the Red’s centers and forwards.

Cornell’s season will kick off on Nov. 23 against Georgia Tech in Newman Arena.

Finding A Lead Lawyer

The search for a new dean of the Cornell Law School is almost over. The search committee is expecting to select a candidate by the end of this semester. The committee was formed fairly early last spring after Lee E. Teitelbaum, the former Allan R. Tessler Dean of Cornell Law School, announced his resignation due to “compelling family reasons” late last November. Teitelbaum left Cornell after the 2002-2003 academic year concluded. Prof. John A. Siliciano, law, is currently serving as the interim dean. Admissions Under Teitelbaum’s tenure, there was a substantial increase in yield on admissions, rising from 19 percent when he began in 1999 to 27 percent in 2002. “The law school is on a sound financial basis, with faculty salaries now at the average for our peer schools and reserves for additional faculty that will permit further growth,” Teitelbaum wrote in the letter announcing his resignation last November. Many law school students do not see major obstacles awaiting a new dean. “Most things are going well. I think most people don’t have burning issues to talk about,” said Victoria Hadfield grad. Members of the search committee also noted the strong shape of the law school. “The law school is in an extraordinarily healthy posture and what we’re looking for right now is someone who will take the law school to even higher levels of excellence,” said Kevin Clermont, the James and Mark Flanagan Professor of Law, a member of the committee. “So we’re looking for someone who values scholarship and teaching and will also build new strengths for a 21st century law school.” Though the search committee was formed last spring, it took a break during the summer. It has now resumed meeting on a regular basis. “The committee worked throughout the spring to identify internal and external prospects and expects to have a list of finalists early in the fall semester,” said Provost Biddy (Carolyn A.) Martin, chair of the committee. The committee is currently in the process of conducting preliminary interviews and expects to have selected finalists in four to six weeks, though Martin said that it is currently impossible to know how many finalists there will be. According to Martin, once the finalists are selected, they will be invited for on-campus interviews. Other members of the selection committee include Profs. Online Add/Drop System Replaces Lines at Barton

Remember the line of bleary-eyed students that used to snake around Barton Hall every fall the day before classes started? That line is no more. Many Cornell students still woke up early on Wednesday to complete the familiar task of adding and dropping courses. This year, however, instead of waiting in line to get drop slips signed, students were able to add and drop their courses online. Online add/drop is a relatively new process at Cornell which was added to the standard features of the “Just the Facts” software last year. The program allows students to add and drop classes instantaneiously instead of waiting to get an add/drop slip signed before formally adding or dropping the class. Online add/drop began Wednesday at 7 a.m. Since the first campus-wide online add/drop in January of last year, several changes have been made in the system. According to David Yeh, assistant vice president and University registrar, “Rather than schedule each class, as of yesterday, everyone had access…. Students were not limited.” Previously, each graduating class was assigned a date and time that they could begin online add/drop, beginning with seniors and juniors. Although all students had access to the add/drop server, Yeh said no technical difficulties were experienced, and all of the systems functioned efficiently. “There’s been probably 500,000 to a million hits on that server…. We’re continuing to monitor it.” Another change in the system allows students to access online add/drop while not on campus. According to Yeh, this feature will allow students who are abroad or away for the semester to add and drop classes with the rest of the University. “Our hope is to provide students with some flexibility,” Yeh explained. A formal add/drop at Barton Hall did not take place this year, as all students utilized the add/drop online. The Office of the Registrar took steps to ensure students did not make the mistake of going to Barton. “We even posted some people near Barton [to turn people away],” Yeh said. According to Yeh, the volunteers did not have to remind anyone of the new online process. Terri Zelasko ’04 said that she was extremely relieved that there was no line. “Freshman year I had to stand in line all day for a math class and I still didn’t get it at the end of the day. This was much better,” she said. Kim Pinkey ’04 had a similar reaction to the new process. “It was amazing,” she said. “We didn’t have to wait in that godforsaken line [at the old course exchange].” Yeh said that students have been pleased with online add/drop since its inception last year. “Last year we had some very positive feedback,” he said. In addition to helping students efficiently add and drop classes, the new program also will benefit the colleges and college registrars. According to Yeh, “In general, the colleges and students have been pleased.” The new system “gives college registrars more time to really manage special situations and issues,” Yeh said. Faculty checking class lists will be able to immediately know accurate counts of the students in their classes. According to Yeh, “Colleges are not having to delay getting into the system” to check class lists. One feature in the online add/drop system allows faculty advisors to either require that their students see them to discuss add and drop choices, or allow students to complete the process on their own. According to Yeh, “We give faculty the ability to make decisions” about whether or not their students need to come see them before making course choices. The online add/drop will allow students to immediately know whether or not they are enrolled in a particular course. It will not, however, place students on a waiting list if they still wish to enroll in that class. “Right now, there are no wait lists [in the online add/drop system],” Yeh said. “That is something we want to build in.” Students will be able to add courses unitl Sept. 19.
