An unidentified Cornell student fell to his death in the Fall Creek gorge last night near the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity at 804 Stewart Ave. shortly before 11 p.m., according to several sources.
At 10:50 p.m., Bang’s Ambulance responded to a call, according to Brad Marzolf ’93 at the rescue service.
“The young man was coming down behind the fraternity, jumped over a fence, thought he was on a trail, and he wasn’t on the trail,” said Lt. Tom Parsons, acting assistant chief of the Ithaca Fire Department. “[He] ended up jumping over the fence and ended up in the gorge.”
Parsons said that the student has been identified. The IFD would not release the name until the student’s kin was notified.
According to Parsons, the student was walking with a companion who reported the incident.
“He went down into the backyard of this fraternity and jumped over the fence, thought he was going down the path; obviously there was no path there and he went over the edge of the gorge,” he said.
Several unverifiable sources claimed that the deceased student was on the Cornell wrestling team. A member of the team contacted by The Sun said that there had been “an accident” but would not comment further.
The IFD, the Ithaca Police Department and Cornell Police all responded to the incident. There was no official comment at press time, 4:45 a.m.
