Isaac Kramnick, vice provost for undergraduate education, announced on Saturday that Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart will be next year’s selection for the New Student Reading Project.

The announcement was made at the annual meeting of the Association of Class Officers in New York City.

“It’s a very provocative and interesting choice,” said Tommy Bruce, vice president for communications and media relations.

Things Fall Apart was Achebe’s response to Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, according to the Nigerian author. The tragic novel is read in multiple courses at Cornell and is a part of the curriculum in many high schools across America.
