Downfall is a plucky and ambitious recounting of a highly sentimental, deplorable dent in Western history. The story of the Second World War that has, thus far, placed focus on the carnage in the name of ethnic purity is primarily told from the perspective of Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara), Hitler’s personal secretary. The pretty Aryan epitome plays surrogate to the average German citizen lulled into the Nazi promises of a clean, paradisiacal future, oblivious to destruction and driven by confidence in Hitler’s commanding charisma.
