With EP–Volume 1, The Brakes attempt to defy the “college band” mold and break into a more serious market. While the disc suffers at times from an overall shoddiness in terms of production quality, it does an excellent job of encapsulating the band’s sound into a five-song collection that is rich with originality, versatility and virtuosity.
