History — it’s everywhere you look, even here — especially here — on The Hill. Witness this memorial plaque for college godfathers Ezra Cornell and John Fiske from 1883. Present the day the plaque was laid, the words read (once you push the ivy aside), was then Governor Grover Cleveland, and “and afterwards President of the United States.” … And, of course, president after that! (Note: Grover Cleveland is the only person to serve two non-sequential terms as president (1885-1889, 1893-1897). And to think, as one stands there and tries to summon up that long ago day one hundred and twenty three years ago, Grover Cleveland once stood on this spot.
