Gun control – a debate

The horrible massacre at Virginia Tech a couple of days ago will inevitably prompt discussions here at Cornell about gun control laws and citizens’ right to keep and bear arms. We all know that that right is enshrined in American law.

My question is: why has no one attempted to restrict the sale of ammunition for these weapons? As far as I can tell, nowhere in our laws is a right to ammunition guaranteed. Could this loophole not offer us a convenient way to circumvent the powerful gun lobbies and our more conservative fellow citizens who strongly resist any curbs on freedom to own guns?
