Despite being roused from sleep by a fire alarm the night before its competition, the Red equestrian team garnered 36 points — good for third place at the 13-team show in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Skidmore hosted the show and took first place with 43 points, followed closely by Hartwick with 39 points.
The team was led by its tri-captains: senior Christine Garvey and juniors Caroline Shulman and Dana Kendrick. Shulman captured second-place finishes in the open fences and open flat events. By finishing second in the open fences she also qualified for the Regional Championships. Kendrick won the open fences and open flat events.
Because of those two first-place finishes, Kendrick also was able to compete in, and win, the high point rider of the day. Garvey won third place in the intermediate fences and fifth place in novice flat.
Other notable performers were freshman Kelsey Craig, who won the advanced walk trot canter, and sophomore Zoe Samuel who came out on top in the intermediate flat after drawing a personal favorite horse.
So far, the Red has 11 regional qualifiers: Kendrick, Shulman, Garvey, Samuel, junior Jessica Bemis, junior Alyse Mizia, sophomore Heather Sherman, senior Kaitlyn Stanmeyer, senior Lauren Wu and junior Marie Ceranowicz.
