  • Local Tibetans Respond to Violence in Native Country

By Venus Wu March 28, 2008

This is the first of a two-part series examining how local Tibetans are responding to the violence between China and Tibet.

The thick black fumes and deafening clamors of political turmoil may be halfway across the globe, but the recent outbreak of violence in Tibet hits home for many in Ithaca.
Palden Oshoe, a Tibetan who lives in Ithaca, has not called his eldest siblings in Tibet, Western China since news of the riots broke.
“They were in southern Tibet where there is not much riot. But to call them would be a risk, because [the Chinese] are keeping track of every call coming in,” Oshoe said.
Ithaca is home to about 50 Tibetans, including Tibetan Buddhist monks in the Namgyal Monastery, the North American seat of Dalai Lama.

  • M&T Bank, Among Others, Stops Giving Student Loans

By Michelle Sun March 28, 2008

College acceptance letters are finally rolling in and, after grueling examinations and endless applications, high school students can finally rest easy — but not quite so fast. Several large banks — including M&T Bank, which has a large presence at Cornell — have dropped out of the Federal Family Education Loan Program.
The bank’s move to leave FFELP — through which certain colleges have chosen to provide federal student loans — decreases the selection of lenders for students who require financial aid. While the consequences for students have become more serious than expected, prospective and current Cornell students need not worry, since Cornell participates in a direct loan program in lieu of FFELP.
