The underclassmen offensive duo of sophomore striker and midfielder Lena Russomagno and freshman forward Brook Chang scored three of Cornell’s four goals this weekend at the Puma/St. Bonaventure Invitational. Cornell split the weekend’s contests, defeating Oakland University 4-1 on Friday, but then lost to Central Michigan 3-0 and finished the tournament in third place. Russomagno and Chang’s firepower was rewarded yesterday, however, when the two were named to the Invitational’s all-tournament team.
Russomagno scored her pair of goals during the Oakland match, pushing the Red out to a fast start with her first goal a mere 51 seconds into the contest after streaking down the right side and hitting a high, arching shot that soared over the head of Oakland’s goaltender and into the side netting. Capitalizing on a scoring opportunity following a Cornell corner Russomagno added a cushion goal midway through the second half to increase Cornell’s lead to 3-1.
The rookie Chang started her career with the Red off right with her first ever game-winning goal in the Oakland victory. In the 25th minute Chang hit a chip shot from 25 yards out that again looped over the head of the Oakland goalkeeper, but just under the crossbar, to give Cornell the 2-0 lead.
The eleven-man all-tournament team consists of four players from the tournament’s champion Central Michigan, three players from host St. Bonaventure and two apiece from Cornell and Oakland University.
