Gauthier Is Bright Spot In Regionals Weekend

The men’s tennis team finished up the main draw of the ITA Northeast Regionals on Sunday. The Red was led by sophomore Andy Gauthier, who won four matches in the consolation bracket of the tournament and advanced to the finals in a championship dual with Brown’s Kendrick Au.[img_assist|nid=32825|title=Don’t sweat it|desc=Andy Gauthier advanced to the finals this weekend after defeating four opponents in a row at the ITA Northeast Regionals.|link=node|align=left|width=|height=0]
Gauthier won his fist set, beating Drexel’s Carlo Panglinan (6-4, 6-4). He then notched his second victory against Chris Hasyn of Penn State (3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6)). In the next round, Gauthier suffered his first set loss of the tournament, after Temple’s Flip Rams stole it from his, 5-7. Unperturbed, Gauthier came back, winning the next set, 6-4, and taking the match. In the semifinal round, Gauthier was again victorious, this time over Boston College’s Akash Muppidi, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (5).
Cornell had multiple other team members make it to the third round of singles play. Sophomore Jan Jaklitsch was beaten by Mihai Nichorofr of Columbia, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Josh Goldstein lost to another Columbia ace, Jonathan Wong, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6. Despite winning his first set, sophomore Jeremy Feldman lost to No. 3 Peter Capkovic of Princeton, 7-6, 6-4. Making the almost-sweep complete for the Red, junior Jonathan Fife was defeated by Ekin Sezgen, of Columbia, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, senior Kyle Doppelt and Goldstein lost, 8-5, against the duo from Brown — Garlan and Garnder. Also in the third round, Feldman and Gauthier lost to Harvard’s Ermakov and Vergosin, 9-7.
