Bob Saget descended on Ithaca yesterday for originally, inexplicable reasons. He had already been to the school once in my four years here — telling a slew of dirty jokes that Danny Tanner would have cringed at (unless they’d been about actual dirt…).
Turns out Bob Saget wasn’t here to tell more uncomfortable jokes (at least not only that), but he was here to film something — a show about “interesting subcultures” for A&E tentatively called Bob Saget’s Strange Days. Hm, I guess that would fall somewhere between the innocence of Full House and the lewdness of his stand-up.
Robert Sharenow, Senior Vice President, Nonfiction and Alternative Programming, of A&E explained, “the show will reveal hidden corners of the real America and the real Bob Saget, who is even funnier and more relatable when just being himself than any other role he’s ever played.”
Here at Cornell there are a lot of interesting subcultures to examine, but Bob Saget is investigating one of the lesser-known subcultures, the fraternity Seal & Serpent. I can already imagine the rep this is going to give Cornell fraternities and social life in the Ivy League all together.
When I heard this I momentarily forgot that Seal & Serpent was a fraternity and immediately thought they were a secret society, of which the filming would have been much more scandalous, and possibly, more interesting.
But then I remembered Seal & Serpent, one of the oldest continuous fraternities, excuse me, societies, in the United States, as a fraternity house on North Campus. According to a curious pedestrian on Ho Plaza yesterday (and the A&E project description), Bob Saget and his A&E producers may have come looking to be initiated into a fraternity, and this small, independent fraternity opened them with arms wide open.
IvyGate, however, is reporting that A&E will film Seal & Serpent’s philanthropy event, a party and a formal. Apparently the producers already sat through an initiation a few weeks again — no word on whether or not the initiation is getting recreated for television.
Sounds like a busy weekend for Bob Saget and the small number of Seal & Serpent brothers. The comedian was spotted at Dunbars last night, and is said to be here through the weekend so keep your eyes peeled for a lanky older man creeping around. Keep me posted about your sightings.
