Louis Dale ’10 has signed a contract with German team BG Göttingen.
“We are very happy that he joins us and we are looking forward to see him play in the German Beko BBL as well as in the prestigious Eurocup competition,” the team’s public relations officer Björn-Lars Blank stated in an email.
“Our head coach John Patrick points out that (for him) Dale was one of the best PGs in the NCAA Tourney. Also saying that Louis is a bright and intelligent person who fits into Göttingen very well.”
Göttingen is a town well known for its university, with many of the 120,000 inhabitants being students.
Dale’s teammate at Cornell, Jeff Foote ’10, will be joining him overseas, having just signed a contract with Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv in Israel.
Foote will have company in the Holy Land, as his fellow tri-captain Jon Jaques ’10 has also signed a deal to play for Ironi “Eldan” Ashkelon, which competes in the highest division of Israeli basketball. Jaques is a former member of the Sun’s editorial writing board.
Speaking of men’s basketball alumni, Ryan Wittman ’10 made his debut with the Celtics Monday in Orlando, Fla. Wittman, who signed an NBA summer league deal with the reigning Eastern Conference champions, did not play in Monday’s game, per coach’s decision. The Celtics lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 87-82.
On Tuesday against Evan Turner and the Sixers, Witt was 3-for-4 with six points, an offensive board and a steal in only 10 minutes of action. Boston dropped its second contest in a row, 86-69, while Philadelphia improved to 2-0 in summer league play.
The Celtics on Wednesday picked up their first win in Orlando, dominating the Charlotte Bobcats, 92-71. Wittman dished out three assists and contributed a block in 20 minutes of work.
The Indiana Pacers rallied from a 27-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to beat the Celtics, 86-85, on Thursday afternoon. Witt nailed his first 3-pointer in a Boston uniform to finish with three points, two rebounds, a steal and an assist in 16-plus minutes. He attempted two shots on the day — both from 3-point range.
The Celtics closed out their Orlando summer league schedule on Friday, falling to Derrick Favors and the New Jersey Nets, 86-68. Wittman shot 4-for-7 from the field in just over 21 minutes of play. He finished with eight points, three rebounds and two steals and was 0-for-2 from beyond the arc.
The Sun’s Athlete of the Year will next play for the New York Knicks in the Las Vegas summer league, which begins on July 9 and goes until the 18th.
Wittman will be joined by Syracuse guard Andy Rautins, who was drafted by the Knicks with the 38th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft.
In an ironic twist, Rautins will wear No. 20, which was Wittman’s number during his four years at Cornell.
Witt Watch: Vegas Edition
Wittman did not play in Sunday’s game against the Denver Nuggets, per coach’s decision. Despite trailing by as much as 17, New York battled back to tie things at 70 with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter before ultimately falling to Denver, 100-90.
Speaking of team uniforms, this week’s sign of the apocalypse: the name on the back of Ryan’s jersey actually read “Whittman” in his Knicks debut (photo courtesy of Jon Jaques, who was in Vegas with Jeff Foote to cheer on their friend and former teammate). Foote was in town for business purposes as well, meeting with his new coaches.
On Monday, Wittman/Whittman shot 1-for-3 with a 3-pointer in just over nine minutes of action, as the Knicks evened their summer league record at 1-1 after taking down the L.A. Lakers, 71-63.
Despite shooting 0-for-2 from beyond the arc, Witt managed four points and an offensive rebound in 3:39 and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free-throw line as the Knicks fell to the Toronto Raptors, 102-89, on Wednesday. And for the record, the name on the back of his jersey read “Wittman.”
Cornell’s all-time leading scorer did not play in Friday’s 92-80 win over Detroit, and managed two rebounds while shooting 0-for-2 from the field in 7:22 against Washington on Saturday. The Knicks beat the Wizards, 109-107, in overtime. No. 1 overall draft pick John Wall did not dress for the game.
