A 48-year-old Ithaca resident sustained serious injuries after losing control of his bike and crashing into a fence on the 200 block of Lake Street, on the lower edge of West Campus, Friday afternoon.

The cyclist was airlifted by helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., where he was listed in serious condition, according to the Ithaca Police Department.

The Ithaca Police Crash Investigation Team cited speed and mechanical problems as possible causes of the crash; however, the incident is still under investigation.

On Sunday, IPD Officer Michael Nelson said the department did not have any updated information on the victim, whose name is still being withheld, pending notification of his family.

Ithaca Police closed Lake Street on Friday afternoon while the Ithaca Police, Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance Inc. responded to the accident. Nelson said he did not know how long the road remained closed.
