State Police released the name Tuesday of the man who was shot and killed by Ithaca Police last week. Keith Shumway, a 20-year-old from Ithaca, was killed after he “violently attacked” another officer, police said.

The Ithaca Police officer who was attacked was filling out paperwork in his squad car at the Citgo gas station on the corner of West State Street and South Corn Street on Thursday night.

During the struggle, Shumway “tore the officer’s duty weapon away,” the New York State Police said in a statement on Friday. One round was fired and grazed the officer’s leg.

A second Ithaca Police officer soon arrived, ordered Shumway to drop the weapon and then fatally shot the suspect.

The state police are conducting the investigation. The names of the officers involved have not been released. They have been placed on administrative leave, which Ithaca Police Chief Ed Vallely described as standard protocol.
