Men’s tennis head coach Tony Bresky informed his team late Wednesday night that he will be resigning in order to accept the same job at Wake Forest, multiple sources told The Sun. The head coach plans to meet with Athletics Director Andy Noel Thursday, with an official announcement expected soon after. As of Wednesday evening, Bresky had yet to inform Noel of his decision, sources said. Details surrounding the situation remain unclear, but the unexpected announcement hit the team just two days before its first match of the 2011-12 season, which takes place on Friday at the Princeton Invitational.A full-time replacement has not been announced, but for now, Brendan Lynch will serve as Cornell’s acting head coach. Lynch, in his first year with the Red, previously served as an assistant at Penn State, his alma mater.Bresky led the Red to its first-ever Ivy League title in 2010-11 — his first year at the helm of the men’s program. Cornell finished the year undefeated in the Ancient Eight, en route to an overall record of 26-5. The season ended in the NCAA tournament where Bresky’s squad fell to nationally-ranked Louisville, 4-0.Wake Forest lost its head coach of 15 years when Jeff Zinn left for Penn State on Aug. 20.
