Re: “Letter to the Editor: Preserving the image of the Arts Quad,” Opinion, Nov.. 17

We in the College of Arts and Sciences want to assure the writer of Thursday’s letter to the editor that she can put aside her concerns about preserving the image of Cornell’s iconic Arts Quad.  The new Humanities Building will provide access to the Arts Quad without being visible from the Quad. It will be located behind Goldwin Smith on East Avenue, with a roof lower than Goldwin Smith’s, an architectural solution that respects the beauty of both Goldwin Smith and the Arts Quad. After we have this much needed addition, the Arts Quad will continue to be what the writer values so highly — “the beautiful, open space” surrounded by buildings “where over a century of learning” has taken place.
