As students attended class in Goldwin Smith Hall Thursday morning, a small fire broke out, filling the building with smoke and necessitating its evacuation.

No injuries were reported.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., a Cornell Environmental Health and Safety worker noticed smoke emerging within the building, according to the Ithaca Fire Department. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found that an electrical fire had broken out in the elevator machinery room.

The fire was quickly knocked down, and firefighters cleared the smoke from the building, according to the IFD.

Goldwin Smith was reopened by 10:30 a.m., IFD said. Firefighters are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
