On April 2, 2013, President Barack Obama unveiled the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies Initiative: an ambitious research program that aims to map the functions of the brain with the ultimate goal to treat neurological and psychiatric diseases. Several Cornell professors played key roles in directing recommendations for this initiative.

“Our idea was a very simple one – in the field of neuroscience, the number of neurons you can probe is growing, but it’s been growing slowly,” Prof. Paul McEuen, physics, said. “The number of extra neurons we can probe has been doubling every, say, five years.”
