One Ithaca College student died and three others were injured Sunday when the car they were riding in returning from Thanksgiving break crashed on Interstate 88.

The crash occurred just before 10 p.m. in Cobleskill, N.Y., which is 122 miles away from the City of Ithaca. The driver swerved to avoid hitting a deer that emerged from the center median, causing the SUV to roll over several times, according to the Associated Press.

Michael Clark, a junior at Ithaca College, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three other students — Ezra Chamberlain, a junior; Melanie Pond, a junior; and Christopher Rose, a sophomore — were transported by emergency responders to Albany Medical Center.

Ithaca College issued a statement to the community Monday offering its condolences.

“We extend our deepest sympathies — as well as our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time — to the family, friends, classmates and professors of these four members of our campus community,” the statement said.

As of Monday afternoon, there were no updates available on the condition of the three students who were hospitalized.
