A dump truck traveling down the 200 block of Hector Street lost its brakes, running into the opposite lane of traffic and crashing into a utility pole and trees at approximately 3:51 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, according to the Ithaca Police Department.

The driver was not injured, according to police. The front end of the truck — which was carrying asphalt and towing a trailer with a paver — was heavily damaged.

The truck, which belongs to Harrison Paving Company of Bucks, Pennsylvania, was operated by an employee of the company.

Hector Street was closed off until the truck was removed and the telephone pole was replaced, according to IPD. Two large wreckers and responders from six different emergency teams and government organizations were at the scene.

Wednesday’s accident is the second incident in recent months where a large vehicle lost control of its brakes. On June 20, a large tractor-trailer barreled into the Simeon’s Restaurant on the Ithaca Commons, injuring several and killing one.
