Officers from the Ithaca Police Department found a dead body in the water at Ithaca Falls Wednesday afternoon, according to public information officer Jamie Williamson.

Police responded to a report of a dead body around 2:30 p.m., finding the body “in the water in a creek bed in the Ithaca Falls waterway system,” according to Williamson. The Ithaca Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance transported the body to a nearby hospital for an autopsy.

On Thursday afternoon, police said they identified the body as Kirk Preuss, a 51-year-old male from Ohio. The autopsy, completed on Thursday, also “determined that no criminal act was deemed to have played a role in the cause of death,” according to police.

On May 12, in a separate incident, Ithaca police recovered the body of William Ruoff ’78, who died after jumping from a ledge near Ithaca Falls. The IFD and New York State Police joined IPD in a nearly five-hour search for Ruoff.
