The Grand Rapids Griffins have acquired senior forward Trevor Yates of Cornell men’s hockey on a one-year deal for the 2018-19 season. Yates will join the Detroit Red Wings American Hockey League affiliate for the remainder of the current season on an amatuer tryout.
Over his career with the Red, the Quebec native totaled 65 points on 32 goals and 33 assists, the most of all current seniors. Yates also tied for the team lead in goals and points this season with 13 and 26, respectively.
As an alternate captain, he scored the team’s only two playoff goals in the 2017-18 campaign.
In the last couple years, Yates has improved his play as a forward, with a breakout junior season featuring 12 goals.
The forward is the third Cornell forward to sign a professional contract this week, following classmates Alex Rauter, who signed with the ECHL Atlanta Gladiators earlier today, and Dwyer Tschantz, who signed and debuted with the ECHL Worcester Railers on Wednesday.
Yates will make his debut as early as Friday evening.
