TCAT Collides With Vehicle Downtown, Landing Six in the Hospital

A Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit bus crashed into a passenger vehicle on Tuesday morning near the downtown Dunkin’ Donuts, sending six passengers to Cayuga Medical Center, according to an Ithaca Fire Department press release.

After the impact, the TCAT bus ran off the road and hit a tree off the road’s side, the release said. The accident busted out the windshield of the bus, according to released photos taken at the scene.

The Ithaca Voice reported that the collision occurred after the passenger vehicle ran a red light at the intersection of South Meadow Street and Green Street, and that the driver was not injured an issued a ticket.

Tompkins County 911 received a call just before 9 a.m. reporting a collision, the press release said, and a dispatched emergency response including the Ithaca Police Department and Bangs Ambulance found the bus driver, some bus passengers and the vehicle driver with “various injuries,” according to the release.

The Voice reported that the bus driver and seven passengers sustained injuries in the crash.

The collision resulted in backed up traffic for over an hour, and IPD is currently investigating the accident.
