A resolution to create University committee to assist transfer students was passed at the Student Assembly meeting held yesterday. The resolution, proposed by Andrew Brokman ’11, Transfer Representative At-Large, and co-sponsored by Nikhil Kumar ’11, S.A. Minority Representative, was for the establishment for an ad-hoc committee, known as The Committee on Transfer Affairs, with the responsibility of maintaining transfer-related activities and legislation,
S.A. president Ryan Lavin ’09 said the resolution was the result of problems within the transfer community that had arisen, particularly since the transfer student center had been demolished in September 2006.
Lavin explained that the lack of a student center had spread the transfer students throughout the campus and that the sense of unity fostered by the center had been lost.
“The transfer community is more geographically divided and therefore less able to voice common interests,” Brokman wrote in the resolution.
“A transfer committee would be better equipped to address the needs and concerns of the growing transfer community,” he explained.
The committee established by the S.A. will be an official part of Cornell’s governance structure and deal with all aspects of transfer student life, including academic and residential life.
“What this committee does,” Lavin explained, “is it makes the issue [of the transfer student community] a formal issue for the government.”
“Formalizing this will hopefully move things along,” he added.
The Committee will be chaired by Brokman and include transfer students as well as the Chair of the Campus Life Student Advisory Committee, Chair of the Student Assembly Committee on Residential and Community Life, the Residential Programs Director and the Vice President for Student and Academic Services as ex-officio members.
