Cornell gymnastics traveled to West Chester, Pennsylvania to take on the University of West Chester in a head-to-head matchup to end the regular season on March 14.
In its 27th meeting with the Golden Rams, the Red continued its historical 19-8 winning streak.
Sophomore Addy Rothstein and senior Sydney Beers were the two highlights of the meet. Rothstein achieved career-high scores on the floor and uneven bars, and Beers won the all-around competition with a final score of 37.800.
On the uneven bars, the Red started strong, with Rothstein tying for first in the event with 9.750. Junior Morgen Shambo continued her specialty on the bars with a 9.750, tying her season-high score.
Sophomore Avery Byun started with a clean routine and one small misstep on her dismount during which she combined multiple moves. Unfortunately for Beers, her uneven bars score was down to 8.650 also due to trouble on her dismount.
“I got an 8.650 on bars because I missed my foot on my dismount [and] then fell over on a cast handstand,” Beers said. “We are going to work hard in the gym this week and go in confident next week.”
After a reset, Beers hopped back on the bars and redid the dismount, landing successfully. Up next for the Red, Rothstein answered strongly with her career-high score of 9.775.
For the vault event, Beers bounced back and took first place with her 9.750 score. Rothstein, Byun and junior Cami Whitaker tied for the next team top score at 9.650. Cornell had all clean landings on the vault with few mistakes and deductions. Its final score on vault was 48.275.
During the balance beam event, the Red combined for a 46.950 score. Byun and Beers led the team with scores of 9.725 each. Cornell also had three girls earn scores lower than 9.000 due to falls and missteps.
To wrap up, the Red continued to shine on its fabulous floor routines. No one on the lineup earned a score lower than 9.550. Rothstein and Whitaker led the team with scores of 9.850.
Despite missteps and flaws, the Red was still able to best West Chester and close off its regular season on a positive note. Looking forward, Cornell will travel to Philadelphia, where the University of Pennsylvania is set to host the Gymnastics East Conference Championships on March 22.
“Ending the season with a win was a great thing for the team; however, for GEC, we still need to make sure we go in to do our best and hit 24 out of 24,” Beers said.
On March 22, Cornell will take on UPenn, Bridgeport University, Brown University, Yale University Southern Connecticut State University, West Chester University and The College of William and Mary. Coverage of the meet will be available on ESPN+.
