Men’s tennis extended its strong season with an authoritative 6-1 victory over St. John’s on Saturday at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, New York. Cornell triumphed over the Red Storm, which was previously undefeated in dual matches, handing St. John’s (14-2) its second loss of the season.
Cornell dominated from the start, taking the doubles point with ease, securing wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The Red then carried its momentum into singles play, capturing straight-set victories at four of the six positions.
Senior Adit Sinha led the charge at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Felipe Pinzon sealed the win with a solid 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 5. The team continued to rack up wins to finish off the match.
With this win, men’s tennis stands at 10-3 on the season and is now preparing for the start of Ivy League competition. The team will next face Columbia at 2 p.m. on March 29, looking to hold its strong form as it enters the conference season.
Meanwhile, women’s tennis delivered a 4-0 sweep against Howard in Washington, D.C. The Red, now 8-3 overall, dominated the Bison at the Banneker Recreation Center, improving its winning streak to two.
The match saw Cornell start strong by sweeping the doubles point, winning both the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. In singles play, the Red’s depth was on full display. Freshman Sage Loudon’s commanding performance at No. 3, where she lost only three games, set the tone. Freshman Andrea Martinez De Los Rios at No. 6 followed suit, surrendering just four games, which propelled Cornell to a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Victoria Zhao then sealed the win for the team with a thrilling second-set tiebreaker victory at No. 2, securing a 6-4, 7-6 (1) win to put an exclamation point on the match.
Martinez De Los Rios not only excelled in singles, but also teamed up with senior Jenny Wong at No. 3 doubles — where they earned a 6-4 win, securing the overall victory for the Red.
Women’s tennis will now look to carry its momentum into its next matchup at Georgetown at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 16.
